The Label That Started It All: Death Row Records
"What does a record company do when its CEO is behind bars and its top talent scatters like rats on a sinking ship? That's the challenge facing gangsta rap label Death Row Records and Marion "Suge" Knight, who is serving a nine-year parole-violation sentence for his part in a 1996 brawl at Las Vegas' MGM Grand. On the same night, Death Row artist Tupac Shakur was gunned down in Knight's limo. Rappers Dr. Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Nate Dogg, and Kurupt (of Tha Dogg Pound) have all left the label, and Interscope Records has dropped its distribution deal with the company. Some Death Row executives have been under investigation for weapons trafficking and drug dealing, among other crimes." -cnn.com
That's the question, now here's the answer: They regroup. With Suge Knight still behind bars, Death Row has signed new artists to deals, recorded new music, and dropped a new album titled "Chronic 2000: Still Smokin.'' With these new artists known has Swoop G, Tha Realist, Y.G.D. Tha Top Dogg, Crooked I, Mac Shawn, V.K., Soopafly, Lil' C-Style, Doobie and the few old ones that remain including Tha Dogg Pound, J-Flexx, Jewell, Danny Boy, Michel'le, and all the unreleased music Death Row holds of the late rapper 2 Pac; Death Row Records will once again rise in the 2000, and take back the hip hop crown.
