  I. What Is HVAC Engineering?
Many people do not know what HVAC engineering deals with. The branch of mechanical engineering that deals with Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning is most commonly referred to as HVAC engineering. Microsoft Encarta defines HVAC as: related processes designed to regulate ambient conditions within buildings for comfort or for industrial purposes. Heating an area raises temperature in a given space to a more satisfactory level than that of the atmosphere. Ventilation, either separately or in combination with the heating or air-conditioning system, controls both the supply and exhaust of air within given areas in order to provide sufficient oxygen to the occupants and to eliminate odors. Refrigeration and some electrical work related to air conditioning and heating are also parts of HVAC engineering. Sanders Engineering as well as other HVAC engineering firms deal with the heaters and ventilation systems of many of the buildings and structures in populated areas.

II. The History of Sanders Engineering
Sanders Engineering Co. is a small mechanical engineering firm specializing in HVAC. The company’s headquarters are located in Yorba Linda, California. Sanders has been in the business for over thirty years in the construction industry, serving Local, State, and Federal Government, as well as Education, Residential and Commercial construction markets nationwide.

Established as a sole proprietorship by a mechanical engineering consultant named Al Sanders in 1969, the company started with only five employees. After struggling for some years it was finally incorporated in California in 1978. In 1981 a well experienced engineer named Craig Jackson became the Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of the company. Jackson graduated from Howard University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and also received an M.B.A. (Business Administration) degree from Pepperdine University. Before working at Sanders he assisted in the design of systems and helped mechanical engineers solve technical problems at Carrier Air Conditioning Co. from 1973 to 1983.

  III. Major Products and Achievements
Ranked among the top six Minority-owned businesses in the United States, Sanders currently employs over 200 people, has completed more than 4,000 jobs, and is currently worth over 45 million dollars. Major jobs include the design of many of the air conditioners for some of the Metro Red Line Rail stations in Los Angeles, California as well as many recreational areas in Southern California. Sanders is also known for bonding other companies with Treasury listed A.M. Best "A" rated Corporate Surety Bonding.

Sanders Engineering has had many accomplishments throughout its history. Listed below are some of the most memorable achievements the company has accomplished:

West Angeles Cathedral
Sanders wants to supply this church in Los Angeles, which can hold up to 5,000 people, with heating and ventilation. The system consists of two air cooler chillers, one ash fired boiler, pumps, 21 air handling units, 10 fan coil units and several supply and exhaust fans for ventilation and smoke evacuation.

Metro Red Line
The North Hollywood stations for the Metro Red Line rail system mainly consist of several supply, exhaust fans and DX cooling coil for electrical and control rooms. There is also ductwork on the track level to withstand piston effects of the train.

California State University, Northridge
When the Oviatt Library at CSUN was rebuilt due to major damage from the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, Sanders' obligations were to furnish and install two handling units, chillers, pumps, five fan coil units, four exhaust fans, ninety one VAV (what is that) terminal units, a humidifier, ductwork , hot water, piping, duct/pipe insulation, and condensate drains (for HVAC equipment).

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) Taxiway
The major job for Sanders on this project, which will last until October 2001 is to install the ventilation system for the Sepulveda Blvd. Tunnel expansion at the Los Angeles International Airport. Eight axial fans by American Fan Woods, thirty two spiral silencers by South West Enclosure, sixteen conical silencers by Vibro Acoustics as well as other air-conditioning and heating units are to be installed.
