"Buffy, you feeling ok?" Willow whispered to her friend seated next to her. She didn't look so good and this wasn't the first time she'd noticed.

Buffy just wanted to go to her room and crawl under the warm covers. Instead she was suffering through another of Walsh's lectures and feeling like hell.

"I'm ok, Will," she told her friend not wanting to worry her. Buffy hadn't been feeling well at all the past few days. She figured she was coming down with something, which was a little rare as the slayer, but not impossible. "Just feeling a little oogy still. I'll be fine," Buffy assured her.

Class ended not soon enough for Buffy. As the students filed out, Riley Finn made his way over to the two girls gathering their things. He smiled and greeted his girlfriend and her friend.

"You looked a little bored there during class, Buffy. Walsh not so interesting today?"

"Was it that obvious?" Buffy groaned, "I just feel crappy again today. Getting sick maybe," she informed.

"I'm sorry sweetie. Anything I can do?" Riley wrapped his arm around her as they walked toward the hallway filled with students.

"Not really... you can walk me to my dorm though. I think I need to crash for a while."

"Well I gotta get to my next class," Willow said speaking up, "I leave you in good hands and get some rest, Buffy. Maybe that'll help some."

"Yeah, Buffy, you really don't get enough sleep sometimes. You're always out till late and-"

"Well excuse me if the fate of the world depends on me. I gotta patrol, you know, and the monsters aren't going to stop just because I feel a little sick," Buffy responded annoyed.

Willow frowned at her friend's sudden change of mood and Riley tensed slightly beside her.

Buffy frowned, "Ugh, I'm sorry. See, now I'm even getting bitchy. Look, I know you're worried about me but I'll be fine with a nap or something, ok?"

Willow nodded, "Alright, I'll see you later then. And take that nap; you need it! Bye, Riley." Willow disappeared through the halls moments later.

Buffy and Riley stood at the door to her dorm as Buffy dug through her bag for the keys. She unlocked the door a minute later and Riley followed her in. She plopped down on the bed, dropping her bag on the floor beside it.

"You sure there's nothing else I can do for you? Are you hungry? I can bring you some food," Riley told her sitting on the edge of the bed and looking down at Buffy's slightly pale face.

"Really, I'm good and, not hungry. My stomach isn't loving food lately. I was feeling a little nauseous this morning actually. It's just enough for me that you care," She smiled at his concern for her. He was so sweet sometimes... worrying about her and all. "I'd kiss you but, I don't want to get you sick too."

"Hmm, I don't mind," he grinned leaning down to her face...

Her hand reached up and guided his face away from her. "Nope, there will no spreading of my germs around. Now, get out and let me sleep," she laughed.

*****************************

She was late... *really* late... and it was freaking her out.

She hadn't even realized it till now. After Riley had left earlier, she'd slept about two hours ignoring the fact that she had afternoon classes. She'd woken up a while ago now and lay in bed, exhausted still, but her mind was too busy bothering her. Something was off, she could feel it, and it had dawned on her finally.

But it was completely impossible! There was no way she could be... She wouldn't even think it because it wasn't happening. It was a ridiculous thought and she didn't know why it had even come to her. Her and Riley where no where near that stage in their relationship. There was absolutely no backing to the idea at all. Her and Parker had happened ages ago at they'd been careful then anyway. But why was she late then? It was highly unusual for her and she wondered if it was some effect of the hellmouth. Yeah, that must be it. The hellmouth was messing with her system. Or maybe it was some slayer thing Giles had failed to mention to her. She sighed deeply and rolled on her side crawling further into the blankets covering her body. She'd have to talk to Giles about it.

****************************************

He didn't care anymore. The rational part his brain that was telling him to stop meant nothing to him at that moment. All his heart was focused on her only. Her lips pressed against his and his fingers laced through her shiny golden hair. The bright sun shone down on them as the kiss intensified and they pulled each other tighter. She hadn't felt like this in so long and she didn't want it to ever end. There were sensations she'd never experienced before and old ones that came rushing back to her. Longing and pent up passion from the past months they'd been apart were present in that one kiss. She hadn't even realized till now how much she'd missed him. what a huge part of her soul felt not whole without his presence in her life. This moment was heaven and she wanted it to last forever. Her arms wrapped around him caressing his back and pulling him even closer. His heart beat in his chest against hers and she reveled in the feel of it. Their hearts soared at the possibilities it brought.

**************************************

Buffy woke gasping for breath. Her mind reeling from the images the dream she had conjured up.

Angel.

Why was she dreaming about him again? What was he doing invading her sleep? She was long past this, yet lately he'd been the product of her every dream. The dreams were so vivid and she almost felt like she was living it. She couldn't handle this now. She had other much more serious things to worry about than silly fantasies about her ex-demon honey being human. She groaned and pulled herself up out of bed. She couldn't go back to sleep and risk seeing him again. feeling all those things that were forbidden between them.

Forbidden.

That was exactly why they weren't together now. They could never have those things. could never be happy together. She'd moved on from him. Buffy had long ago stopped moping over his abrupt departure from her life. She had Riley now. A nice, solid guy that cared about her and could give her everything she needed. Angel should be the last of her thoughts right now.

****************************************

Buffy Summers sat in the small waiting room of her doctor's office. There were magazines scattered on the small table beside her but they hadn't helped to occupy her time. She was nervous. Maybe this had been a bad idea after all. She figured she'd get a scientific opinion before she had Giles delve into the supernatural for her. There could be a perfectly non-demony explanation for what was happening to her. She *wasn't* pregnant, but it could be something else that was causing her symptoms. So the doctor had examined her and took some blood tests the day before to help determine what was wrong. He'd asked her to come back the next day when the results would be ready and then he could explain whatever it was to her. So she sat waiting as her foot tapped the carpeted floor nervously.

****************************************

Giles was startled as his front door opened quickly and slammed shut. He came out of his kitchen assuming he'd find one of the kids having come unannounced again. Buffy stood in his living room with a stricken face and red eyes. She looked like she'd been crying. Concern and worry came over him immediately.

"Buffy, what's wrong? Has something happened?" He guided her to the couch having her sit beside him. He looked at her waiting for a response. Her voice came out broken as she spoke, "Giles there's something wrong with me. I don't understand. I- it doesn't make sense and it's scaring me. I don't. I don't know what to do."

"Buffy, just tell me what it is. I'll do my best to help you."

She nodded slightly and continued, telling him of the past few days.

"So, the doctor asked me to come today and that with the test results and all he would be able to tell me what was wrong."

"Yes, well, what did he say then? Is it something serious Buffy?"

"He told me that I'm. pregnant," She hesitated on the last word and the rest came out quickly, "All the tests indicate the same and he said there was really no possibility that there was any mistake. Which is just insane! There has to be- I'm not having a baby Giles! It's impossible. I haven't." Her voice trailed off as she fought back the tears threatening to spill. "Could this be some demon thing? Can a demon a demon infect you or something and."

She looked at him hoping he'd jump in with his infinite knowledge of the occult and tell her about some demon with a name that she wouldn't be able to pronounce.

Nothing. He didn't even suggest they research the subject. He was just silent with a pensive look covering his features.

He spoke finally, a little uncomfortable with what he was about to suggest, "Buffy, I realize you're in a relationship right now, and something like this can be very frightening and-"

"Giles! I'm telling you that I haven't been with anybody. This pregnancy thing is ridiculous because for it to be true *things* have to have happened that have NOT happened!"

"Buffy you're an adult now and you have no reason to justify your actions to me. I'm not your watcher, not officially, and I'm not your father either. It's not my place to judge, but if you and Riley have."

"That's just it! Riley and I haven't, Giles. Kissing is as far as we've let it go. I haven't slept with him or anyone else. I swear."

Giles didn't look entirely convinced. He'd never heard of any kind of demon that could do something of this nature.

"Giles believe me! I have no reason to lie to you about my personal life. Sure it's a little awkward sharing it all with you, but I swear I haven't slept with Riley."

Giles nodded conceding. He had to believe her and her attitude gave him no reason to think otherwise. He took his glasses from his face and rested his head in his hands for a moment.

"Alright. I'll start researching. I've never actually heard of anything like this, but there are a lot of demons and I most certainly haven't studied all of them. There are certain parasitic demons that need a host to develop. However, I don't recall ever reading of it manifesting its self this way."

"So, you think it's possible. that maybe.?"

"I'm going to find out, Buffy." She hugged him lightly giving him her unspoken thanks and then stood to leave.

"Please don't worry too much and do be careful," he told her.

"I will." She left Giles' house a little more calmed, but wondering just how she was going to explain this all to her friends. and Riley... and Oh God, her mother!

********************************

It'd been a few days now and Giles had found nothing. Buffy had gone over with him all the demons and supernatural creatures she'd come against but none of them possessed any power to cause Buffy's current situation. It had occurred to him that magic or some sort of spell could also be involved and Willow was helping as much as she could in that area. Her friends and even Riley had been more supportive than Buffy imagined. She was even gladder now that Riley knew she was the slayer because otherwise she didn't know how she would have explained it all. Joyce on the other hand was rather upset, although not so much with Buffy since her daughter had assured her the cause was definitely demon related. This had all only served to stir up Joyce's feelings of resentment against Buffy's imposed lifestyle and her usual fears for her daughter's well being.

However, apparently Buffy was six weeks along and if this was in anyway similar to a normal pregnancy then it had started sometime near the end of November. Whatever had attacked her or infected her body could have done so around that time. So Buffy had gone over in detail with Giles the events of those days, most of which he was already aware of. The subject of her trip to LA to see Angel had of course come up.

"Buffy you and Angel didn't..."

"Oh come on Giles! I saw Angel for five minutes and you know as well as anyone that nothing can happen between us." Buffy remembered pacing around the room her voice raised as she continued, "I can't believe you of all people could suggest that! And even if something had happened between us, which it DIDN'T, Angel's a *vampire*! Remember that whole being dead part? Angel told me a long time ago that vampires can't have children. AND don't you dare even mention that little incident with Spike! Nothing happened when we were under that spell either!"

So needless to say the subject of Angel hadn't come up again. Buffy just gave a quick explanation of the Mohra demon that had attacked, dismissing it and saying that, "it wasn't relevant because Angel killed it within seconds."

So the research continued and the Scooby Gang gathered to pour through the many of Giles' volumes. They were starting to give up on finding much in the books and Buffy was only getting more worried. She was not keen on the idea of some hell spawned creature growing inside her and they all agreed she had every right to feel that way. Giles had finally told them to take the evening off and go get their minds off the situation for a while. He didn't know if that was entirely possible for Buffy but it wasn't helping to have her spending every waking hour concentrated on it either.

The small lamp on Giles' desk illuminated the darkened room and the many books and notes that were scattered on it. The book in front of him held little information and he'd already made several phone calls which had proved less than productive. Giles wasn't planning on giving up so easily, but he was running out of resources. There was one person he hadn't contacted yet and he was still hesitant to do so. This was a very delicate situation in itself and Giles wasn't sure how Buffy would react if he got Angel involved. Angel had contacts though, and if it was possible to get any information through him, whether directly or not, Giles would be grateful. He just hoped Buffy would understand his position.

***************************************

Angel sat in his office late that evening reading. It was a quiet night and Cordelia had gone home hours ago. The phone ringing beside him brought his attention away from the pages of the novel. He reached to grab the phone wondering who would be calling so late. Giles' voice on the other line was the last he expected and he became worried at the thought that something could be wrong with Buffy. Getting past the formalities of greetings and on to the matter of importance, Giles continued, "Angel, I need your help."

"Is something wrong? Is Buffy alright?" Angel didn't bother hiding his concern for her, besides Giles knew well enough how he felt about Buffy.

"I'm not entirely sure. She's not in any immediate danger if that's what you're thinking. There's a problem that I been researching and I haven't had much luck. I thought you might possibly be of some help in getting me information. Possibly a volume you've come across in the past or a similar situation. Even somebody you could contact that might-"

"Giles, what is it? If there's something happening, you know I'll do what I can to help. especially if this concerns Buffy."

"Yes, it does. it's a rather delicate situation however and I'll inform you now that she's not aware of my contacting you. I doubt she'd be very pleased with it but I'm running out places to look and people to turn to."

"Buffy and I don't have any contact, Giles. There's no reason for her to find out from me about this conversation or that I've given you any information. Now what exactly is that you need me to find out about?"

"Well it would appear that, um, Buffy is. well, she's pregnant," Giles sighed waiting for a reaction from the vampire. There was silence on the other end for a moment.

Angel was in shock, "Excuse me? Did you say that... Buffy's *pregnant*?" There was no way that could be right. He must have heard the watcher wrong.

"Yes, that's exactly what I said," Giles assured, "but it's not what you're thinking either."

Angel ignored the last comment and spoke quickly, "Honestly, I don't see how this has anything to do with research. It's not impossible for a slayer to have children. She's a woman just like any other and if Buffy has." his voice trailed off at the thought.

He didn't want to go there. He didn't know how to feel about what Giles was telling him. A part of him wanted to scream in anguish and a part of his mind taunted him, throwing his words from the previous spring back in his face. Hadn't he told her to find a man that could give her everything he couldn't? Someone to be with her in the light, make love to her, give her children. Hadn't she just done what he asked? But what hurt most was the fact that he could have been that man. He had the chance to give her all her heart's desires but he'd sacrificed it. That glorious day he'd spent with her filled his senses as it had constantly in the past month.

Giles' words, however, brought him out of the reverie and what he finally heard shocked him even more.

"Buffy hasn't, Angel. That's what's different; she insists that she has not had a physical relationship with anyone. There was a boy, Parker, but that was sometime ago. Buffy's been adamant about this and I don't see any reason for her to lie about it. So, I've been researching to see if it could be of demon origin. I've never heard of anything similar but I don't see any other explanation. The point is, we've been researching non-stop and I've yet to find anything useful."

"So, Buffy's pregnant but she hasn't slept with anyone? There was no mistake, or anything? Has she seen a doctor?"

"No, there's no mistake, Buffy is six weeks pregnant. She saw a doctor before she even came to me. She's frightened, Angel, and she's turning to me for answers," Giles' own worries for the slayer were obvious in his voice. "I can't even tell her what kind of danger this is to her. I don't know if this demon has infected her body somehow or if it could be slowly killing her. Witchcraft could be involved also." His frustrations in not being able to come to a conclusion about the matter were clearly noted by the vampire on the other line.

"I've lived a long time, Giles, and I've come across a lot of demons and spells, but nothing like this."

"So far, it seems to be a perfectly normal pregnancy and if she's six weeks along then that places her encounter with this demon or whatever is causing this at approximately the end of November. Buffy told me when she went to LA to see you that a Mohra demon attacked you, but what I've read about Mohras gives no indication that-"

"Giles, wait a minute," Angel's mind took a moment to process just what Giles was saying. The time Buffy had been in LA was in question and he couldn't stop himself from thinking of that day. Buffy and he hadn't bothered to be careful. It'd all been so sudden and they'd both ended up being more interested in taking advantage of his precious gift of humanity than being logical. Why was he even considering this as an option? Wishful thinking he assumed. That day had been taken back. Even if a child had been conceived that day there was no way it could be a reality now. Angel still held the memories of that day but that was all it was. memories. He wasn't human and whatever could have happened that day *didn't*.

"I think I know who I can contact to get some answers," Angel finally told Giles. The Oracles seemed like his best bet at the moment. If there was any connection at all to that day, then they would be able to tell him.

**************************************

"Concerning what matter have you come to us this time?" The male Oracle spoke seemingly annoyed by Angel's presence.

"The slayer." The white marble walls of the room caused Angel's words to echo and the Oracles looked intently at him, waiting for him to continue.

"Something's happened to her. I need to know what's causing it. It could be a threat to her life."

"What exactly has occurred that effects her so seriously?" the female Oracle asked. Her eyes cast down from Angel's face to examine once more the golden medallion he'd brought as a gift.

"That's what I need to know." Angel paced as he explained the situation, "She's pregnant and things don't add up, meaning this could be the work of a demon or some other supernatural force. Her Watcher has been searching for an answer but he's found nothing. He hasn't come across anything that could give the symptoms that she's experiencing."

"The symptoms that would indicate she's expecting a child?" Angel nodded in response to the male Oracle's question.

"What makes you believe that her current condition is anything related to the supernatural?" She didn't give Angel a chance to answer but proceeded to speak, her head cocked to the side slightly. "This is not a demon's work. In fact, it's perfectly natural. The slayer is indeed expecting a child. A child that was created through the union of a man and woman."

Angel didn't understand. If Buffy was truly expecting a normal human baby, then had she lied to Giles? Was there someone she'd... His eyes scanned the floor as he spoke aloud, "But, are you sure? According to-"

"She does not remember," the male Oracle stated simply.

Angel's head shot up at those words. "Are you saying.?"

Nodding, the female Oracle elaborated, "Did you and your slayer not consummate your love for each other that day? I'm certain those events have not escaped your memory. The two of you created a life that day. A precious life which grows inside your slayer now."

"How is that possible? The day was erased. What happened between us was *taken back*. I don't understand how there can be any physical consequences to something that never-"

"The Powers are capable of more than you could ever imagine," the male Oracle told him laughing softly.

Speechless.

Angel was speechless at the notion that Buffy could be having his child. That was the last thing he expected to hear when coming here. Now the one question that filled his mind was *why*?

"The child has *power*," the female Oracle whispered, answering his unspoken question. "Yes, your day as human was swallowed in time, but the Powers felt it necessary to intervene. They will do what they see fit to further their cause. That child is the product of *love* and love is a powerful force against darkness and evil. There is little love as pure and the one found in yours and the slayer's hearts. You both possess an immense power as warriors and your love has only served to strengthen that."

**"Together you are powerful."**

The Mohra's words flashed through Angel's mind.

"This child, conceived in a love *so pure*, holds the power of you both. As two of our strongest warriors I think you can understand what that means. The Powers That Be need such a powerful being on their side. They would not allow the Mohra, however indirectly, to succeed in taking a warrior from their cause."

"So our child is to join the fight. become a warrior?" Angel shook his head in opposition. His mind was still registering that fact that he was going to be a father, but he knew for sure that he *didn't* want his child to lead a life like his and Buffy's.

"You can not argue this," the male Oracle told him, "The child was allowed to live by the Powers because he or she will be needed to fight our cause. You WILL accept it as you have accepted your own destiny. When the End of Days comes to pass your powers combined will have a profound effect. From this day forward it will be yours and the Slayer's duty to protect this child. He will be born as any normal baby but you will both have the responsibility of preparing him or her for what is to come."

Angel gave his consent. Any argument with the Oracles would be futile at this point. Later, however, it could be an entirely different story.

"What about Buffy? How am I going to explain this to her. Why would she believe me if she doesn't even remember?"

"That is already being remedied," the female Oracle said. "Go to her with the truth. She will believe you." She waved her hand dismissing him and turned away from Angel with her brother.

"Wait! Where does this leave Buffy and I? My curse still prevents us from any kind of relationship. How are we to raise a baby together if-"

"That is not our concern." The male Oracle looked back at Angel over his shoulder as he spoke, "You will raise the child regardless of whether or not you both engage in a. *romantic* relationship. As long as the child receives love from the both of you it will be enough."

Before Angel could protest he found himself back underground in front of the portal. He ran his fingers through his hair still not quite believing what the Oracles had just told him. He squeezed his eyes shut and wondered if he might wake up any minute and find that he'd fallen asleep reading in his office again.

He needed to talk to Buffy. needed to tell her everything the Oracles told him. Would she believe him like the Oracles said? Or would she laugh in his face? Without any knowledge of that day it would sound ridiculous that she was expecting his child! Did she even want to have a child with him? He was still a vampire and the Oracles weren't at all concerned with the fact that the happiness clause still held firm. The way he figured it, they were in the same place they'd always been. Except now they wouldn't be able to avoid each other. There were a million complications that filled his head, but whatever happened now, it was certain him and Buffy would have *a lot* to work out.

*********************************

Angel walked silently down the streets of Sunnydale hoping Buffy was out tonight. He hadn't bothered to call Giles back because he needed to speak to her before anyone else. After seeing the Oracles the previous night he knew he needed to come to Sunnydale right away. He hadn't explained much to Cordelia and Wesley either. just that something came up and he needed to be here. He told them not to worry and promised he'd call them from Sunnydale.

The drive from LA had seemed endless. There was no denying that he was afraid of her reaction. Everyone's reaction for that matter. Of course, before he could even get to that, he would have to explain just how it all happened in the first place. Everything about that day and what the Oracles had said to him. He'd gone over what he was going to say a million times, but he had the sinking feeling that when it came to telling her face to face none of that would help.

He spotted her at the Expresso Pump. She was sitting at a booth and her head was resting comfortably on the man beside hers shoulder. Willow sat across from them and they looked to be having a normal conversation each with their coffee drinks in front of them. Angel remembered the guy. He was the one he'd seen her talking with the last time he was in Sunnydale. He was probably her boyfriend and Angel felt his heart constrict in pain.

He stood by a nearby tree watching them for a moment. Her expression seemed tired and he imagined she wasn't getting much sleep. He wondered for an instant if he should even tell her. Was his presence in her life something she really needed now? Would he just serve to make things worse. more uncomfortable then they had been before he left town. He didn't see how they could manage to be a part of each other's lives without actually being together. They'd tried the friends routine long ago and it'd been useless.

He sighed heavily knowing there was no way out of this. She had a right to know what was happening to her and he wasn't about to leave this child without a father. This pregnancy was already a risk. A slayer expecting a child was dangerous. Once the vampire community found out, this baby would need protection from the both of them to survive.

Angel crossed the street swiftly gathering up the nerve to speak to her again. to handle seeing her with whatever her new boyfriend's name was. He'd walked up so that her back was to him and Willow was the first to notice his presence. Her eyes widened in shock and surprise and she was unable to speak for a moment. If it had been any other time he might have laughed.

"Willow? Is something-" Buffy immediately noticed her friend's surprised look and she lifted her head from Riley's shoulder.

"Angel," Willow choked out finally. Giles told her he'd called him and she wondered if he had found some information.

"What? *Angel*? Will, what are you-" Buffy's words failed her then as she looked behind her to where Willow's eyes were fixated.

Angel stepped forward to stand at the end of the table. "Hi Buffy," he spoke softly.

There was silence as Buffy took in the sight of him. He was in his usual attire: the dark clothes and the long black leather coat. He looked exactly the same as always. His handsome face was expressionless. She shook her head in confusion and broke the awkward silence, "What are you doing here?" Her voice came out a little colder than she'd anticipated. "I, I mean. Hi. I'm sorry, but.I'm a little confused here."

Riley watched the scene with bewilderment. Buffy was suddenly rigid by his side and Willow looked slightly embarrassed. The tension was obvious. He took this opportunity to clear his throat softly.

"Oh sorry!" Buffy blushed remembering that Riley was beside her. "Angel, this is. um." her eyes squeezed shut an instant as her mind went blank. "*Riley*! Riley Finn. Riley, this is Angel. He's an old friend."

"Nice to meet you," Riley said politely.

"Likewise," Angel replied quickly. He turned back to Buffy, opening his mouth to speak, but she didn't give him the chance.

"Why don't you sit?" She offered. Willow scooted over leaving him the spot across from Buffy. Angel nodded and took a seat. Once again Buffy's words interrupted him.

"I thought we had a deal?" She said simply, knowing he understood exactly what she was referring to.

"Yeah, we did-"

"Then why are you here?"

"I need to talk to you."

"Did Giles call you up? Tell you what happened.?" Her eyebrow raised slightly as she looked at him accusingly.

Angel looked to Riley wondering how much he knew about Buffy.

"Don't worry, Riley knows I'm the slayer."

"Oh. Look, yes, Giles called me, but-"

"Well he shouldn't have."

"Buffy-"

"We're doing just fine, thank you. I can understand you and Giles sharing some info every once and while but I *don't* see any reason for you to be here now." Her words were laced with anger. He had no right to jump back into her life whenever he pleased! It'd been his decision to leave. Why couldn't he just stick to it?

"I know what's happening to you, Buffy, and it's not demon related."

"What do you mean it's not demon related? And if you know what it is, then why couldn't you just tell Giles over the phone? This little visit is completely unnecessary and-"

"No, Buffy, I *do* need to talk to you about what's happening. I wouldn't have come to Sunnydale if-"

"Fine!" She said exasperated, "What is it? Just tell me already."

"I'd rather talk to you alone," Angel responded eyeing Willow and Riley. They both looked quite uncomfortable and Angel had definitely not been planning on having an audience for this.

"Angel, I'm going to have to tell them anyway, so just *say it* already!" She wasn't in the mood for this now.

"Fine." Angel complied. If that's what she wanted. "Your pregnancy is completely natural, Buffy. The child is mine."

"WHAT?!" Buffy exclaimed. She looked to Riley and Willow who seemed about as shocked as her. "Do you realize what you're saying?!"

"I know that it sounds cra-"

"You and I have NOT- and even if we had, you know very well that-"

"Buffy, if you'll just let me explain."

"No! There's nothing to explain. Have you listened to yourself, Angel? You're insane! Completely! This isn't even funny."

"You know me better than that Buffy. Do you think I would joke about something like this? That baby is yours and mine."

The seriousness in his voice held Buffy back from yelling at him again. But what he was saying was impossible. There was no way. She stood up and motioned for Angel to do he same. "Wait here," she told Willow and Riley. She then grabbed Angel's arm and led him toward the sidewalk away from the others.

"What the hell is wrong with you? What are trying to do?"

"I'm trying to tell you the truth Buffy. If you'll just listen to me."

"I don't see what you could possibly say. You and I have not-"

"You don't remember."

Buffy scoffed, "Please Angel, I think that I would remember something like that."

"If you'll let me explain, it'll all make sense. You just have to listen to me."

Buffy sighed. She couldn't believe this was happening, but she agreed to his request.

"You remember when you came to see me in LA and I killed that Mohra demon?" At her nod of yes Angel continued, "Well that wasn't exactly how it happened the first time."

"The first time?"

"Buffy, please just let me finish."

"Fine. Sorry," she apologized and waited for him to go on.

"The demon attacked us the first time and it got away. We went after it together in the sewers, but then we split up. I ran into it again alone. We fought and somehow its blood mixed with mine." Angel looked down at the palm of his hand remembering, "The demon's blood has regenerative properties. it made me human."

Buffy sucked in a breath as she listened to Angel's words.

"I went to find you once I was sure it was real. You were out by the-"

"Beach," she finished for him. "I was standing there in the sun and. you kissed me." A look of realization dawned on her face. Her dream.

Angel stared at her, looking deep into her blue-green eyes. "You *remember*?"

"No!" She shook her head as she spoke, "That was dream. I- I had a dream like that, but it wasn't real."

"No, Buffy, it did happen. I was human that day. We both lived it and that baby is proof."

Buffy didn't say anything. Her hands reached down hesitantly towards her abdomen. A baby. hers and Angel's, not some demon hell spawn. Those dreams that she'd been having were so vivid, but they couldn't be real. They couldn't.

"We went back to my apartment. We made love."

"I fell asleep in your arms, listening to you heartbeat." She lifted one hand from her stomach and up to his chest. She closed her eyes and in her mind she could hear the sound of his heartbeat.

"You remember everything?" he asked her.

Visions from her dreams swam through her head. Things she'd never remembered from those dreams surfaced in her mind. She spoke softly, slowly as she sorted the details, "I think so. The Mohra came back to life and you went to kill it. You almost died and then you asked them to change you back."

He saw the tears welling in her eyes and he wanted more than anything to gather her in his arms. "The Oracles gave us back the day."

"Yeah. There wasn't enough time. Oh God Angel, I said I wouldn't forget." The tears couldn't be held back any longer and they rolled down Buffy's cheeks. "I forgot. I didn't want to forget."

His arms were around her in an instant and she buried her head into his shoulder taking comfort from his embrace. "Sssh, you couldn't help it. The Oracles."

Buffy pulled away to look up at him, her arms still holding him, "But the baby, Angel. How? If they swallowed the day, how can I be...?"

"The Powers That Be. They intervened to let you kept you keep the child."

"The Powers? Why would they do that?"

"The Oracles told me that the baby has power. It has the power of the both of us."

"What does that mean?"

He was reluctant to tell her the rest, but he knew he had to. "They want our child to be a warrior like us. With the power of the both of us he'll be a great ally. When the End of Days comes he or she will have to fight by our side."

Buffy looked at him incredulously. He couldn't be saying this. "No. Angel, you can't be serious. It's not fair! I've already had to sacrifice your life and mine for this damn world and I won't sacrifice our child!"

"There's nothing we can do about it right now, Buffy."

"It's not like a prophecy. It's simple, I say 'no'. I tell them to forget it. This is my baby and I won't allow it. I won't."

"I don't want this either Buffy, but at this point we don't have a choice. This was the reason The Powers let our child live and the Oracles said we have to accept it."

"I don't want our baby to live this kind of life, Angel."

"We'll both be there for him or her. Our baby won't do this alone. The Oracles said it's our duty now. We have to protect this child and prepare him for when the time comes."

"Alright. There's still a long way till this End of Days deal. we still have time." Buffy sighed heavily and rested her head against him. She'd accept this... for now.

"Angel?"

"Hmm?"

"Where. Where does this leave *us*?"

He knew that question was coming and he honestly didn't know the answer. "The Oracles said that we have to raise the baby together, that our presence in his life is important. You know that I love you.but besides the baby, nothing's really changed. My curse still holds and there are still things I can't give you."

"But we have to do this together, Angel. I can't do it alone. I'm only going to be 19. I wasn't planning something like this. I don't even know how to take care of a baby! What if I can't handle being the slayer and a mother?"

"I'm going to be here with you, Buffy. I want to be a part of our child's life. I am NOT going to leave you to do this alone. I'll be here every step of the way."

"But we still can't.?"

"A lot of kids have parents that aren't together. We can still both be in our baby's life without actually being together."

Buffy wanted to scream. What was he saying? My God, they were going to have a baby together and he still wasn't willing to give their relationship a chance? How could she possibly move on with her life with him still a part of it... with a baby that was a part of both of them? This baby was a reminder of everything their love was about. She couldn't handle this right now. "Can we talk about this later? I'm still kind of in shock over the whole 'I'm having a baby' part. Oh, and the part where it's yours too."

"Yeah, I know what you mean." He was feeling the same thing and he knew they'd have to sit down at another time and *really* discuss the situation.

"So, um, I guess I kinda need to fill everyone in now. I think they'll be a little surprised."

"Most likely."

"I don't know how exactly I'm going to do it, but-"

"You know, I'll come with you and explain. if you want me to."

Buffy gave him a weak smile. "Would you? Because I'm still a little fuzzy on all the details."

"Of course I'll come."

Willow and Riley sat at the booth watching Buffy and Angel talk even though they couldn't hear a word they were saying. Riley had taken the spot beside Willow so he could see what was going on.

"Willow, do you know what's happening? Is what he said true?"

"I honestly don't know Riley. I'm in the same place you are right now."

Riley watched Buffy intently. From her body language it was obvious she was still angry. "I don't remember ever seeing him around."

"He's lives in LA," Willow explained

"So were they ever.?"

"Together?" Willow asked. He nodded. "It's not really my place to tell, but yeah. They used to be. It was a while ago though and what he's saying doesn't make any sense. In more ways than one." Willow knew that if something had happened between Buffy and Angel in LA Buffy would have told her. Although with the curse and all she didn't see how that was possible. And she was certain Buffy had told her once that vampires couldn't have children.

"It's just that Buffy said that- Not that I'd have any right to be angry if something did happen. I mean, it would have been before Buffy and I were even seeing each-" He was silenced as he saw Buffy was now crying. Her hands rested on her stomach.

And then Angel was holding her. Riley saw a closeness between them. A level of comfort they shared around each other. Something he and Buffy still didn't have. There were still so many awkward moments between them. There was nothing awkward about the way Angel held Buffy now, about they way they spoke with their faces only inches apart. It was like they'd done so a million times. They probably had. Riley couldn't help but think he'd lost her already. He glanced at Willow and saw her confused and worried expression. He sighed, glad for a moment that he wasn't the only one lost.

And finally Buffy and Angel were walking back towards them. As they approached Riley could see her eyes were red and her cheeks were tear stained. Angel followed close behind her almost protectively. He guessed that made sense, especially if she was having his child.

"We need to talk to you guys, explain things. It's kind of a long story. I'd rather only do it once, so we should call everyone and head over to Giles'."

Willow didn't seem all that willing to wait. "What exactly is happening? You have to tell us *something*. Is it true?" she asked her friend.

"Yes. I am going to have a baby and it is Angel's."

"Buffy, how is that possible? I thought-"

"I told you, it's a long story and we'll explain it all once we get to Giles' house."

*********************************

Xander and Anya sat side by side on the couch in Giles' living room. Anya was telling him another of her many stories from her demon days and Spike sat in a nearby chair with a smirk on his face.

"She's not bringing her new boy toy with her is she, because I'm not in the mood to be reminded of-"

"Yes, Buffy is bringing Riley, Spike. I think you can handle seeing him while Buffy tells us what she needs to say."

Spike just growled some curses under his breath in response to the reply Giles gave him. It was because that fish boy Riley that he'd been turned into a puppy dog. Couldn't fight. couldn't feed. He was left at the mercy of the bloody slayer! Riley had agreed only for Buffy's sake not to turn Spike in to the Initiative. They didn't see any reason to do so since he was harmless anyway. They figured he'd be easier to handle in their own hands for now. Just one less thing to worry about, although it never did stop Buffy from threatening to let Riley take him away.

There was a knock at the door and Giles went to answer it. The door was opened and Willow and Riley stepped in first. Riley groaned at the sight of the blond vampire sitting in the chair. He'd had been more than a little surprised when he found out Buffy and her friends were housing Hostile 17. He'd been difficult about it at first, but him and Buffy had eventually struck a deal. They'd both decided to keep their secret jobs separate. They'd given each other the basics about it all but each kept out of the other's territory. Lately however, Riley had been a little more involved with the Scoobys. Mostly just helping with research as it was too risky for him to do much else. If Walsh or anyone else found out that Buffy and her friends knew about the Initiative or if they found out what she was. well, Riley didn't even want to think about that. "What is he doing here?" Riley asked annoyed.

Spike gave him a dirty look and was about to return with an insulting remark but he stopped short when he saw Angel follow Buffy in the door. Drawing his attention away from Riley, he stared at Angel. "Well, well. If it isn't the big poof."

"Spike?!" Angel looked at Buffy in disbelief.

"It's another long story," she answered. "Don't worry though. He's *completely* harmless, can't bite anybody."

"Hey! Bloody hell woman, just ruin a man's reputation." Buffy rolled her eyes and Angel couldn't help but laugh.

"So peaches, what brings you to town this time? Found out about your little slayer here getting knocked up?"

"Spike, shut up!"

Xander grinned from his spot on the couch. Riley, Angel and Spike in the same room together. This should be interesting. "Hey deadboy."

Angel glared at him. "Don't call me that, Xander."

Giles spoke up finally. He didn't understand why Angel had come to Sunnydale. Buffy hadn't mentioned anything on the phone and he could only imagine it was something serious. "Hello, Angel. Quite a surprise to see you here. I was actually expecting a phone call back."

"I know. I'm sorry I didn't contact you again, but I found out what's happening and I needed to speak to Buffy first."

"So everyone here knows Angel?" Riley asked realizing he was the only one not acquainted with Buffy's ex. and soon to be father of her child.

Anya raised her hand and said, "I don't really know him, if that makes you feel better. I do know he was evil once."

"What?"

Spike laughed loudly. Might as well get the facts out. "Yep, and he was a mean bastard too, back in the good old days. Not particularly my favorite vampire the second time around, but that was mostly because he was fooling around with my woman. Still can't complain too much seeing as how I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him."

Wide eyes and glares fell on Spike who grinned in satisfaction.

"He's a vampire?!" Riley exclaimed. Angel sighed looking up at the ceiling. He was so close to going over and ripping that smug grin off of Spike's face.

"Riley please," Buffy said, "Angel's different than Spike. He has a soul. He's on our side."

"You're pregnant by a vampire?!" The surprises just kept coming tonight. At that last statement, there was a commotion throughout the the room as the others realized what was said. Everyone stared at Buffy and Angel and began speaking loudly at once.

Buffy couldn't believe it. This was not how she wanted to tell them, although their reactions to it seemed about right. "STOP IT!" she yelled finally. "Stop it, all of you!"

There was silence in the room as it was obvious the slayer was not pleased. "Thank you," she said. "Now, We're going to explain what's happening, but you all have to promise you are going to listen and that you are NOT going to freak out like that again. Ok?"

They agreed and everyone then took at seat in the living room.

Buffy sat by Angel and they looked at each other for a moment, silently telling the other they were ready.

Buffy spoke first. "First off, Riley, Angel IS a vampire, but he's different. He has a soul. You know when a person gets changed their soul dies and the demon takes over. Angel was cursed with a soul and he controls the demon. He's one of the good guys, Riley."

Riley accepted that much, but her relationship with him? "Buffy you're a *vampire* slayer. First Spike and now him? I don't understand how you could-"

"I don't expect you to understand. I don't even get it sometimes, but weird things happen alright and this is really the least of them. Look, Angel and I had a relationship. We were together for a while, but there were a lot of things that got between us. We broke it off last spring and that's where it ended. until I went to LA right after Thanksgiving."

"You said nothing happened in LA, Buffy," Xander reminded her. "Five minutes of talk. and little demon killing and it was *over*."

"I know that's what I said, but that's not exactly how it went down the first time."

"The first time?" Spike exclaimed, "What the bloody hell does that mean? You went to see the poof twice?"

"Spike," Buffy addressed him calmly, "this is the part where you and everyone have to listen, ok? Think you guys can handle that? Good."

Angel decided to begin the recap of events. "Buffy came to see me that morning and while we were talking a Mohra demon showed up and attacked us, but it got away. We went after it and eventually we split up. I ran into the Mohra alone and we fought. My blood mixed with his... Their blood has regenerative properties."

"Their veins run with the blood of eternity," Giles added.

"Yes, that's right. Well, somehow his blood had the power to. make me human."

There was a collective gasp throughout the room. "How is that possible?" Giles asked. He was astonished.

"I'm not really sure of the science of it, but the next thing I knew I had a pulse and my heart was beating."

"That's fascinating! I never imagined their blood had that kind of power."

"I wasn't sure about it all at first. I needed to know what it meant, if it was permanent and-"

"Well obviously not since you're a vampire now." Xander gave Anya a look. "Sorry."

"I went to see the Oracles," Angel continued.

"You spoke with the Oracles?" Giles asked once again surprised. "How did you manage that?"

"Doyle, showed me to the-"

"Your half demon friend?" Willow asked. "The one that has the visions?"

Angel's face grew serious for a moment as he thought of his friend. "Right, he showed me to the portal and I was able to get in."

"Well, what'd they say?" Willow asked interested.

Angel sighed starting to get annoyed by all the interruptions. "They told me it was real. That I was to live as a mortal man from then on."

"So he came to find me," Buffy continued softly. "We spent the rest of the day together."

"And you two had lots of sex?" Anya supplied. "I mean, I would assume so with that curse thing he's got. I can't imagine having to hold back all those desires." She turned to look hungrily at Xander as she spoke the last part.

"You two had sex?!" Xander exclaimed turning his attention away from Anya and trying desperately not to grab her right on the spot.

Buffy covered her face with her hands. Yes, this was exactly how she hoped it would go. "Well, gee, Xander, I think that's how babies are made," Buffy said sarcastically.

"Good to see you didn't waste any time." Xander muttered.

"Oh please, Xander! Angel and I spent almost a year together and we didn't let anything happen, yet you and Anya can't seem to keep your hands off each other for more than *five minutes*!"

"Buffy." Angel put his hand on Buffy's shoulder trying to calm her. He'd been silent during the exchange not entirely comfortable with the topic of choice.

Buffy sighed and she addressed the rest of the group, "Look, that's not the point here ok. We need to finish telling you all what happened. It turns out the Mohra didn't die because to kill him you have to smash this jewel thingy in his forehead. Anyway, while I was still sleeping that night and Angel took off with Doyle to kill it."

"But you were human, Angel. How did you expect to be able to kill it?" Willow asked.

Angel frowned and Buffy spoke up before he got a chance to explain his reasons, "Good question, huh? That's exactly what I was thinking when Cordelia told me where you went."

"I told her not to tell you," Angel said dryly.

"Well, you should have known better. Cordy has a big mouth. So, I show up and of course Angel's getting his ass kicked by this demon that's ten times stronger than him."

"Buffy-"

"You would have died if I hadn't shown up, Angel."

"Which is exactly why I went to see the Oracles the next day and asked them to change me back."

"You asked them to turn you back into a vamp?" Xander asked surprised.

"How come? You and Buffy had exactly what you always wanted. It's not like you guys didn't deserve it." Willow looked to her friend not understanding, but Buffy just sat there staring at her hands in her lap.

She didn't want to comment. She wanted Angel to get over this part of it. That morning replayed in her mind. She remembered the feeling of losing him all over again and her desperate pleas that wouldn't make any difference in the end. She'd wanted so badly to keep the memory of that day.

"I couldn't stay human if it would cost Buffy her life," Angel stated. His face was serious and he held back any emotion he was feeling. Asking the Oracles to change him had been one of the hardest things he'd ever done. "The Mohra said that something called the End of Days is coming. The Oracles told me that Buffy could die when that comes. I have to be able to fight that with Buffy and I won't be able to as a human. Besides, my being human was too much of a liability. I would have gotten us both killed sooner rather than later."

Everyone in the room was utterly silent. They didn't know what to say to that. Angel had given up his humanity, his chance to be with Buffy if it meant he could protect her and maybe save her life.

"So they Oracles agreed?" Giles questioned at last.

"Yes, but the only way to do it was to swallow the day. The Oracles have control of the temporal folds. They couldn't take back my humanity but they could prevent it. They set back the clock 24 hours so that I could kill the demon before its blood could make me human. The only condition was that I would be the only one to remember the day."

Buffy looked up again. Her voice was quiet as she continued, "So we were in Angel's office again and when the Mohra showed up, Angel killed it before I even realized what was happening. I didn't remember a thing which explains why I didn't understand this whole pregnancy thing this past week."

"But you remember *now*?" Willow asked confused.

"I've had dreams about all of it lately. I didn't realize until Angel told me that they were real."

"But, Angel, if the Oracles turned back time, how do you explain Buffy expecting a child now?" Giles asked.

"I went to see the Oracles again last night and they told me that The Powers That Be did this. As warriors for their cause, Buffy and I have power. You know, Giles, that Buffy is one of the strongest slayers. Not many could go through what she has and still be standing."

"You've *both* been through a lot, Angel," Giles replied.

"Yes, and apparently the child has immense power. It has the strength of both of us and The Powers allowed him to live because they want him on their side. He or she is to fight with us when the End of Days comes. It's mine and Buffy's duty from now on to protect and raise this child and to prepare him to face what's to come."

Buffy sat on her bed the following evening facing the bed across from her. She hugged her legs to her body and rested her chin on her knees as she listened to Willow's question.

"So, what'd your mom say when you guys told her?"

Buffy had come home a little earlier and after settling in the girls finally had a chance to talk.

"She was pretty upset, but I expected as much. It was horrible, Willow. She totally freaked on us. I mean, with just the baby part she flipped and then when I told her it was Angel's." Buffy sighed remembering her mother's more than shocked expression.

"She never did like Angel much, huh?"

"Understatement, Will. First she was like 'What kind of a child is it going to be with a demon for a father?! Is it even going to be human?'" Buffy shifted her position so she was sitting on the edge of her bed and her feet rested on the floor now. "Can you believe she said that?"

"Ouch, what did Angel do?"

"Angel was great. He was surprisingly patient and I think I might have killed my mother if he hadn't been there. She kept interrupting us every two seconds! We could barely explain the whole story," Buffy said with a groan. "Needless to say, she was relieved to find out that Angel was completely human when the baby was conceived. Of course, once the human thing came out she said that she couldn't believe that after everything Angel had done to me I would just jump into bed with him without a second thought. That is so NOT how it happened! Oh! and then she decided to lecture us on using protection and how we should have known better and that at least Angel, being the more adult one in the relationship, should have been responsible enough." Buffy rolled her eyes this time and let head flop down on her pillow leaving her lying on her side.

"I take it you guys were a little too caught up in the moment to think about that," Willow stated with a slight grin.

"It wasn't how you think, Will," she sitting up. "We talked about it before anything happened. We even planned to be mature and take things slow. wait to see if it was all for real, if we could make things work."

"Obviously that didn't last long."

Buffy smirked at Willow's words. "Nope, that plan flew right out the window and we ended up having sex on his kitchen table," she said blushing a little.

Willow's eyebrows shot up. "What?!" she exclaimed with wide eyes.

Buffy grinned as she remembered the shock that had gone through the both of them from that one small touch of their hands. They'd been utterly lost to themselves after that, giving in to well over a year of repressed passion and longing for each other. "It was pretty intense," she added and continued explaining, "We'd spent the past five months apart, Willow. You can't imagine how much I missed him! And we hadn't been together since my 17th birthday! God, it was so hard for us last year being together, but still not being able to really be together. To love someone so much and not be able to truly express it." Buffy trailed off as she realized Angel and her were back in that same position.

Willow looked at her sadly for a moment, but her friend quickly composed herself and spoke again.

"So anyway, then mom gives me the speech about how disappointed in me she is. There goes my chance at a future, because how do I expect to finish school, if I have slaying and a baby to take care of? I have Angel, and we're going to work it all out. The baby's due around June or July, which means I have the summer to take care of him and then I can start school again in September. Angel and I are going to raise this baby together, but apparently that doesn't matter to her. Not only does she think Angel's not good enough for me, but now he's not good enough for our baby either. 'He's a vampire, what kind of a father is he going to be? He can't even go out during the day.' I wanted to scream! I'm a slayer! It's not exactly easy for me either, but when the time comes Angel and I are going to tell our child the truth. As long as we love our child and he or she loves us it won't matter what we are," Buffy finished exasperated. Her words had all come out quickly as she spoke.

Willow nodded silently understanding. "But is she accepting it all? I figured the Angel part would take some time with her, but she hasn't like disowned you or anything, right?"

"No, once she got over the initial shock, it wasn't so bad. She's still not all that pleased with the whole situation, but she said she would try her best to be supportive. I guess that's a big step for her. She's pretty scared about the whole warrior thing too. That's really the only thing we managed to agree on from the start. Neither of us want the baby to have to grow up and have to live this kind of life. I know it's kind of inevitable that our child be involved since I'm the slayer and Angel's a vampire, but I wanted to protect him from getting in as deep as us."

"I'm sorry, Buffy. I don't know what I can say to that, except that there's still a lot of time. The baby hasn't even been born yet, maybe later you'll be able to fight this. I know that if anyone can it's you. and Angel. together," Willow finished with a weak smile.

"Hmph. Together. I don't even know where this leaves us, Angel and I. He's not all that willing to have a relationship with me again. Not like it was before anyway. Whatever we are now, it's just for the baby."

Willow frowned at that. "What about Riley?" she asked hesitantly.

Buffy sighed, "I talked to him this morning. I told him I needed some space to figure things out and just let it all soak in. I think he realizes it's over between us though. I practically begged him not to ever say anything about me to Walsh. I can't imagine what they'd want to do to the baby or me if they knew the whole story. He promised he wouldn't though and I trust him."

Willow nodded knowing Riley wouldn't betray Buffy's secret. "So it is. done between you two then?"

"Yeah. I really did like him, Willow. He's a great guy and he cared about me a lot. I felt so horrible too, knowing that I hurt him. Maybe if things had been different- but they're not different! I love Angel, that never changed. I can't be with someone else if Angel's still part of my life. This baby I'm carrying is a part of him." Buffy's hands unconsciously went to her stomach. She continued, her voice full of emotion, "And finding out that day was real, God, I could never settle for anyone else. That day was the most amazing and perfect of my whole life. I've never felt that way before. like everything was just so. right. Even if I can't have that again with Angel, I can't possibly try and imitate it with someone else."

Buffy arrived at the large mansion on the far end of town. Her footsteps tapped lightly on the stone floor as she walked in. Sunlight poured into parts of main room from the many windows and Buffy's eyes scanned the room looking for Angel. He'd been traveling back and forth between LA and Sunnydale for over a month now. He had decided to continue with his business in LA for a while, but he still didn't like being away from Buffy and the baby very long. He was going to be in Sunnydale again for the next few days.

Buffy found him lying on the couch asleep with a book on his chest. She smiled as she stood before him and carefully removed the book from his hands and placed it on the table nearby. It was almost sunset and Buffy was a little surprised to find him still sleeping. He had driven in from LA just before sunrise though, so she imagined he was a little tired. Angel began to stir a moment later and Buffy kneeled down beside the couch. She leaned in close to him closing her eyes and allowing her lips to brush lightly across his.

Angel's mind was still disoriented from sleep and the warm soft lips pressing on his own were a bit of a surprise. For a moment he thought it was a dream and he responded kissing her back softly. Buffy's hand caressed his cheek and she began to deepen the kiss.

Something in Angel's mind told him this was real and he reluctantly stopped kissing her before he let himself get caught up in the feeling. He placed his hands on her shoulders and gently pushed her away from him. "Buffy."

She frowned at him and stood with a sigh. Angel sat up and Buffy settled down in the spot beside him. He gave her a look and she groaned. "It was just a kiss, Angel, you don't have to get mad," she said.

His expression softened. "I'm not- you know we can't be together like that, Buffy. If we let things happen, even little things, we won't be able to go back."

"Would that really be so bad? We were together before and the curse was still-"

"It's different now, Buffy. We've been over this a hundred times."

"I know and we'll go over it a hundred more, because I'm not going to give up on us. It's worth a try not just for us but for the baby." Buffy was so tired of this, but she wasn't ready to let him off the hook anytime soon. They would* get back together.

"Buffy, you know in the long run things won't work out. It'll only turn out worse and this time we won't be the only two getting hurt."

"We'll be careful, Angel. I know we can make it work. I need you, not just in my life but by my side. with me."

"Buffy, it's dangerous for us to have that kind of relationship. Things could go too far and if my curse were to-"

"It won't, Angel. You know I don't care about that," she told him taking his hand in her own. "Yes, making love to you was wonderful and incredible and I'll treasure those moments in my heart always. they gave us our child. but right now I'll take what I can get with you."

Her eyes looked to his pleadingly and with hope. He could feel himself giving into her.

"Please. It's worth a chance. Doesn't our child deserve to grow up with parents who are together and love each other like a real family?"

He shook his head in protest. "I'll always love you, Buffy. That won't change, but if my demon ever got free. I don't even want to imagine what he'd do to you and our child. That's not a risk I'm willing to take. I'm sorry."

Tears welled up in her eyes as she heard his words. She thought she'd convinced him this time. His words had been the same as always, but his eyes told her otherwise. She'd been so close. God, why did he have to be so stubborn? She pulled away from him so they were no longer touching.

Angel looked away from her as she broke contact with him. He wanted to go back to her more than anything, but the truth was that he was scared. terrified at the thought the he might hurt her or the baby. That child growing inside her was his and it was something he'd never imagined possible. Not only was he going to be a father, but he was having a baby with the woman he loved more than life itself. Just the thought of that made his heart surge with joy. The fact that together they had created another life, that they could share something as special as this baby. it was more than he'd ever felt before. Thinking about her and this baby's presence in his life now and in the future was more than he could handle at times. He was afraid he wouldn't even realize that his soul was being ripped from his body before it was too late. He knew Angelus would have no mercy on Buffy or his child. But then maybe that fear would be enough to hold his soul in place. If he would just keep those thoughts in the back of his mind to remind himself, maybe he would be safe.

Buffy's words brought him out of his silent reverie. "I came here for a reason," she said, "besides what we just discussed."

"W-What is it?" he asked turning back to look at her.

"I'm going to the see the doctor tomorrow to get an ultrasound done. The appointment's in the evening if you wanted to come," Buffy informed not making eye contact with him.

"An ultrasound?"

"Where they look at the baby," she explained.

"Oh, I know. I just didn't realize- I mean. I wouldn't miss it."

Buffy and Angel waited in the small room the nurse had let them into earlier. She had told them that the doctor would be with them shortly. Buffy was a little excited but she noticed Angel was mostly nervous. She gave him a reassuring smile and a few moments later a tall woman in a white coat entered. She smiled warmly at the two of them and spoke, "Hi, Buffy. How are you feeling today?"

"I'm doing good," she replied.

"You must the baby's father," the doctor said addressing Angel who nodded slightly.

"That's right doctor, this is Angel," Buffy said introducing them. "Angel, this is Dr. Lewis. She's who I've been coming to see about the baby."

"It's nice to meet you," Angel said extending out his hand.

"It's nice to meet you, too," she said shaking his hand. "I'm glad you could make it today. Alright, well why don't we go ahead and get started. I'm sure you're both anxious to get your first glimpse of the baby."

She began preparing everything and had Buffy lay back slightly and expose her belly. With her normal clothes it wasn't quite obvious yet that she was expecting, but now Angel noticed there was indeed a slight bulge forming.

"Now this is where the image is going to come up," Dr. Lewis said pointing to a small screen. She glided an instrument across Buffy's abdomen with a jelly substance and an instant later an image appeared on the screen. "It's a little hard to make out, but that's the head and there are the arms." she continued indicating the parts of the image.

Buffy and Angel both stared at the fuzzy black and white image of their child. Buffy smiled in amazement and looked at Angel whose eyes were still fixed on the screen. A silly grin had spread across his face and Buffy didn't ever remember seeing him like this. She giggled at his reaction and slipped her hand into his.

"Are you laughing at me?" he asked looking into Buffy's eyes.

"No," Buffy said giggling again.

He squeezed her hand gently and focused back on the screen. "It's just... wow! That's our baby," he said his voice full of awe. "It's really there growing inside of you."

"Well, I should hope so," Buffy said teasing. "Where did you think our baby was?"

"No. I mean, it's just different actually getting to see."

"Yeah," she agreed turning her attention back to the image of their child. Angel leaned forward and kissed her temple lightly and she was touched by the small gesture.

Dr. Lewis watched, amused by their exchange. "Oh, I can tell you the sex of the baby if you'd like," she offered smiling at the soon to be parents.

Buffy and Angel both looked at each other. "Do- do you want to know?" Buffy asked excited. They both nodded simultaneously.

"I'll take that as a 'yes'," she said. "You're expecting a baby boy, Buffy."

"It's a boy," Angel repeated still in awe of everything.

Buffy's eyes gleamed with joy and she caught his gaze. "We're going to have a little boy."

Angel couldn't hold back his emotion and he cupped her soft cheek in his hand. She closed her eyes and leaned in gratefully to his touch. His lips touched hers hesitantly in tender and beautiful kiss. She opened her eyes and stared at him surprised by the kiss. He just smiled at her lovingly and Buffy decided it was best not question it. Deep inside she knew this was a big step for them. The first of many most likely, but right now it was enough.

"Things are not as they should be, brother," the female Oracle stated. She stood in the large, dimly lit room looking at the figure across from her.

He gave her a questioning look not quite understanding what she was referring to.

"The slayer and the vampire."

The male Oracle sighed at her preoccupation with the two warriors. "What is it now? We have done all that was needed already."

"We were wrong to believe the curse would not cause problems," the female Oracle replied. "It holds them back. Already it is creating conflicts between them."

"They have both agreed to raise and protect the child. It is enough."

"It is not enough," she said firmly. "It is through their love that this child will survive and live to fulfill his duty. The vampire's curse will surely tear them apart in time. The Powers can not take chances in matters such as this one."

"His curse will not be a problem. They are aware of the consequences."

"Yes, but the joy of a child is unlike any other. It could be enough to unleash the demon and you and I both know the slayer will not have the strength to defeat him again. She will not be able protect the child from him. He realizes this even now and he is beginning to fear himself. It holds him back from his duty."

The male Oracle was silent a moment as if weighing the possibilities in his mind.

"The boy will become stronger with the example of his parent's love," the female Oracle insisted, "They *must* be united in every way possible. In their union lies the power to defeat what is to come."

"You make a convincing argument."

"Then you agree?"

Reluctantly the male Oracle nodded. "You do know that we cannot summon him here The vampire's soul shall be bound to him permanently, but we cannot directly intervene."

"I am aware," the female Oracle responded with a slight smile, "and I have already decided upon a solution."

The door to Angel Investigations opened and Cordelia Chase looked up from her spot at the desk where she was filing her nails.

"Hey Cordy," Buffy's voice rang cheerfully through the office as the blonde girl stepped in.

"Buffy!" Cordelia smiled widely at her friend and they embraced in a short hug. "I thought you weren't coming till tomorrow."

"I wasn't but something came up and it couldn't wait," Buffy responded still smiling.

Cordelia's gaze then fell to her friend's now obvious tummy. "Oh God, Buffy, you look like a cow. You're huge!"

Buffy's mouth fell open. "I'm 6 months pregnant, Cordelia. And I'm really not *that* huge!" She exclaimed suddenly looking down at her stomach. Cordelia was just being her usual self and overreacting. right?

"Is that what Angel tells you?" she asked with a smirk.

"Shut up," Buffy said giving her a look. "I'm still going to get bigger than this and I don't even want to think about it."

Cordy just smiled and Buffy spoke up again. "So where is that handsome boss of yours anyway? Is he in his apartment? I really need to talk to him."

"No, he's in his office actually."

"Oh," Buffy said turning towards the door. "Well I'll just go in-"

"He's with someone," Cordy said before Buffy had a chance to enter.

"A client or something?" Buffy asked.

"Um, kind of," she replied. "It's been a while though. I'm sure they'll be done in a few."

"Well, ok then, I guess I can wait a little."

"So what's up?" Cordelia asked after they'd both taken a seat to wait. "I haven't really gotten a chance to talk to you in while. Although, I feel like I know plenty since Angel won't shut up about you and the baby half the time."

Buffy laughed, "Really?"

"Yeah. I can tell he's really excited about the baby."

"We both are. It's all pretty amazing. I mean who would have thought?"

"I know! That whole thing with the Oracles turning back time is weird even you for you guys," Cordelia said. "So, what's the big deal you came to tell him? You're not having twins are you?"

Buffy's eyes went wide. "No way! One baby is enough."

Cordelia gasped at her next thought. "Is something wrong?" she asked worried.

The other girl seemed amused by her concern. "No, everything's fine. It's *good* news actually," Buffy informed her. "*Very* good news."

*****

"Thanks. I really appreciate you doing this for me again."

"It's no problem, really," Angel told Kate honestly.

"Alright," the detective said standing. "It was good to see you again." She started towards the door, but paused and looked back at Angel. "You know, I'd been wondering about you actually. I hadn't seen you around and. well, I called a few times and Cordelia said you were out of town."

Angel had gotten up to follow Kate out and he leaned back against the front of his desk. "I've been in and out of LA a lot lately," he explained, "There's some things going on with my life right now."

"Oh," Kate said nodding, "that's understandable."

"I really don't think I'm going to be in LA that much longer, either," he informed her.

"What?" Her voice came out a little more shocked than she expected. "I mean, what about your business?"

"I'm most likely gonna have to close down. Like I said there are things happening in my life and I need to focus on them," Angel told her seriously.

"Things that are more important than your business?" she asked wondering what could be so serious to require that much of him.

"A lot more important." He couldn't help but smile a little thinking of exactly what was so important. Buffy and their unborn son were undoubtedly the best things that had ever happened to him.

"Well, we'll have to do something then, before you leave town for good." She couldn't believe he was leaving, but Kate kept a smile on her face despite the fact that there was a tugging at her heart. "Maybe we could go for drinks or something," she offered and she imagined for a split second how things might have gone had she gathered the courage sooner to tell him that she really liked him.

"That'd be nice."

"Great," she said opening the door as she spoke. "So, you'll give me a call if you find anything." Kate stood just outside the doorway and Angel nodded coming to stand in front of her. "And please don't get involved this time. I *did* appreciate your help before, but again, I really don't want to get you dead."

"I don't think I want you dead either."

Kate heard the unfamiliar voice behind her and she turned to where it had come from. A pretty girl, no older than 20 she guessed, stood there beside Cordelia. Her long blonde hair fell down past her shoulders and she was quite obviously expecting. Before this all even registered in Kate's mind Angel had turned in the girl's direction and come fully out of his office.

"Buffy," he said walking towards her, "What are you doing here?"

Kate watched with surprise as Angel embraced her and placed a soft kiss on her forehead.

"I came early," the girl, Buffy, replied. "Something came up and I need to talk to you. I hope I didn't inter-"

"Is everything alright?" He cut her off and Kate saw his hand immediately go to her belly and touch it gently.

Buffy smiled up at him. "The baby and I are perfectly fine, Angel. You don't need to worry," she said reassuring him.

Kate just stared not believing what her mind was assuming. Buffy looked in her direction and she saw Angel follow her gaze.

"Oh!" he said remembering Kate's presence. "Buffy, this is Kate Lockley. Kate, Buffy Summers," he said introducing the two. "Kate's a friend. She works with the LAPD and we help each other out every once in a while."

"So, this would be the more important thing going on?" Kate said finally finding her voice.

"Yeah, this would be it," Angel replied grinning. "Buffy and I are going to have a baby."

"Wow, a baby. That's. wow. You're going to be a father. I didn't even realize that- I guess congratulations are in order." Her heart sank at the sight of their happy faces. She should have known better than to fall for him. "I need to be getting back to work," she said with a quick glance at her watch. "It was nice to meet you, Buffy."

"I'll get to tracking that guy as soon as possible, Kate, and I'll give you call as soon as I know something."

Kate mustered a smile and nodded. "Thanks. Bye, Angel. Cordelia," she said acknowledging the other woman.

"Did you see the look on her face?!" Cordy burst out with once Kate had left.

"Cordelia."

"Oh, come on Angel! That was too funny," the brunette said laughing.

"I don't get it." Buffy stated feeling out of the loop.

"It's noth-"

"Kate's had a major crush on Angel since day 1."

"Oh, I see." Buffy grinned at Angel understanding the awkwardness from a moment ago.

Angel gave them both an annoyed look and changed the subject back to Buffy's earlier statement. "You said you needed to tell me something."

Buffy's eyes shined up at him and she slipped her arms around his waist.

"Oh, Angel it's so perfect!" she whispered.

"What is it, Buffy?"

"Well, it's kind of a. *gift* from Willow."

*****

Buffy and Angel lay curled together in the soft sheets of his bed. A smile of pure contentment graced Buffy's features. She lay with her back against Angel's chest and his strong arms wrapped around her body. Their entwined hands rested on her round belly. He nuzzled her neck and trailed soft kisses down her bare shoulder. Buffy sighed with pleasure. "I can't believe this is happening." Her voice was low as she spoke. "Angel, we can be a real family now." She pulled his arms tighter around her.

"Yes, we can. We will," he said confidently, his lips brushing her ear. "I know we'll never be a truly normal family or couple, but I *will* love you both with my whole heart and soul."

"It's more than enough, baby. None of the rest matters as long as I have you with me. Promise to stay with me forever?"

"Forever."

Buffy yawned and let her eyes close. She wanted to fall asleep in his arms again. It was the one place she could let herself forget everything else. She was amazed at how easily the comfort of his arms washed away all her worries and distractions about slaying and her daily life. She smiled at the thought that she could also do the same for him. They found peace in their love for each other.

And they both drifted to sleep, their minds replaying the wondrous evening they'd shared. He had poured his heart out to her again and this time without fear. He was able to give her the intimacy their relationship deserved. Their love and passion for each other would never again have to be held back. Buffy and Angel were filled with joy and hope as they realized that the beautiful act of making love to each other would soon become the most natural thing in the world. They would have hundreds of nights more like this.

Buffy eyes shot open only moments later and Angel's hand whipped away from her stomach as he gasped. They were both wide-awake in an instant.

"W-What was that?" he asked her sitting up in bed beside her.

Angel saw a huge smile creep onto his love's face and she shifted herself into a sitting position with her back against the many pillows.

"Gimme your hand!" she said excitedly. The look of utter confusion on his face made Buffy smile even more and she grabbed his hand quickly and pulled it under the covers to place it on her bare belly. "He's kicking," she explained.

Angel could feel it, the movement coming from their baby. He hadn't known what it was a second ago and it had startled him. Soon enough however, he found himself grinning in wonder along with Buffy.

"How does it. what's it like?"

"It's a little weird," she answered.

Angel's brow furrowed as the movement ceased and he looked at Buffy curiously. "He stopped." His hand slid across her stomach to another spot and then another. Nothing."W-Why? How come he stopped?" he asked her.

"I don't know, honey. Maybe he's tired," she responded smiling. "Oh." He frowned slightly and Buffy giggled. She reached up to cup his face in her hands and guide it close to her own. "You are *so* adorably cute sometimes," Buffy said laughing.

Angel scooted back down beside her, his eyes never leaving hers. His hand slid around to her back and he pulled her closer. "Is that so?" he asked with a now wicked grin."Mmm, hmm," she breathed into his mouth as she kissed him softly.

"Hey!" Angel pulled away from the kiss and eyed her teasingly. "What do mean *sometimes*? Buffy only shrugged at him and tried desperately to hold back laughter. It was impossible though as he proceeded to tickle her mercilessly while at the same time placing kisses all over her face and neck. Their sounds of laughter rang out through the bedroom and Buffy shrieked his name as they struggled playfully beneath the sheets. Angel's mouth promptly covered hers and then only silence remained save for a few whispered I love you's from the happy lovers.
