I have loved Halloween since I was very young. I enjoy the idea that I can become anyone or anything I want to be. my mom originally would dress us up or come up with costume ideas. But by the time I was 9 I was already confiscating things to turn into costumes. I'd gather everything up stuff it into a paper bag and haul it onto the bus to take to school with me. Then I'd go the restroom before the contest and I'd put on the costume and make-up. It paid off because I was always winning costume contests. One of the times was as Raggedy Ann in which my overly curly hair was brushed into style, bright red lipstick cheeks and a dress stolen off of my little sister's full-sized Raggedy Ann doll. Of course I also located red and white socks and took the yelling from my little sister about stripping her doll, but it was worth it.
When the comments came about how I was now "too old" to go and trick or treat anymore, I started taking over the front porch and all duties of handing out candy. My mom was never one to give much parental guidance so I was always on my own for doing up the porch. Since we also didn't have a lot of money, my decorations came from whatever I could scavenge. By the time I was done the front porch was a really scary place to be along with sound effect loop tapes that I would record. Many a time I would go into the bathroom for effect and laugh maniacally or scream at full lung capacity. Then to top it off I would dress the part for the evening. My old half-dead witch along with warts, scars and pocks was legendary in my neighborhood. I was also given a glow-in-the-dark (GID) plaster of Paris skull. I named her .
She had been damaged and my mother was able to buy her on a clearance sale. Sylvia and I have not missed a Halloween together since we met. She has been given marbles for eyes, had eyelashes and make-up and also has a hairpiece. She is a true beauty in her own right.
My Halloween obsessions continued into college. I began making more elaborate costumes and entering better contests. One of the costumes I made was a Jawa. This is the small desert dwelling creature from Star Wars. My costume covered me completely head to toe and included a black mask on my face and the two lighted "eyes" about 6 inches from my face. This one was always fun to wear. When I'm in costume I never break character. I had guys coming up and asking me to dance, not knowing if I was male or female and not even being able to see anything "human" on me. Another costume I made was . This has the full head of snakes, pock marks (oozing) on my face and lighted LED's for the eyebrows that are switch controlled. This one is definitely scary.
Then one day I met . I was over at his apartment one day and I had to get a broom out of the closet. I opened the door and there perched on the shelf was , a plaster of Paris GID skull! It had to be true love...I had Sylvia and he had George. The two of them have been together ever since.
So now with Don, I had a partner in creating even more fun stuff for Halloween. With his talents for electronics, a lot of things could be done much better and with more effect. When we moved to where we are now which is somewhat out in the country, we realized that we would no longer have the hundreds of kids that we had at our previous house that would come trick-or-treating. There was just no one to decorate the house for anymore.
Until one day I decided that we should have a Halloween party. Since that time our parties get larger and larger. Each party is themed, and never anything resembling the scary Halloween traditional themes. The themes have been
We choose the theme and start planning the next year's party the day after the party. We not only take over the house but we also start with a walk-through on our side-yard. We have a very large backroom with a 13-foot long wall.
Each year I paint the entire wall with a new mural. It's what I call disposable art. For "Alien Vacation" the wall was done in GID and had the view of Jupiter from Europa with the star field.
I also have a costume contest. The costumes are awarded from "Best themed", "Most Creative", "Most Bizarre" and "The Lamest". In 2000, there was a total of 7 different awards.
For 2001, the party was on Saturday, October 27th 2001 at 8pm. The theme...."All Jungled Up".
In 2002, the party will be on Saturday, October 26th at 8pm. The theme....
