The original Iron Brigade was formed in 1862. In battle the confederates were shooting and the men of the Iron Brigade would not fall back, retreat, nor would they surrender. They were the shock troops of their day. During the Battle of South Mountain, Gibbon's men gave such a good account of themselves that Corps Commander Hooker referred to them as an "Iron Brigade". This name stuck with them for the rest of the war and forever after. In Sept. 1862 at South Mountain, Md., General McClellan, said, as he witnessed the "IRON BRIGADE" break the center of an entrenched battle line, "These men must be made of iron". On another occasion Gen. McClellan said, "I have seen them under fire acting in such a manner as to reflect the greatest credit upon themselves and their State (Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan). They are equal to the best soldiers in the world. It is not the numbers of men but the right kind of men that makes the "IRON BRIGADE".
The 24th Mich. did not joined the Brigade until the September before the battle of Fredericksburg. The 24th Michigan was assigned to the Iron Brigade as replacements for the depleted unit.
The Iron Brigade WERE NOT YANKEES, they were Westerners. A term used due to all the regiments were from “western” states of the time. They had three major commanding generals through the history of the Brigade, Rufus King, John Gibbons, and Solomon Meredith. General Gibbons was a regular army officer. He had the men carry everything on their backs. It would get heavy. They would lighten their load by dropping the stuff on the road. Gibbons would take inventory of the equipment and took it out of their pay. When they were issued new stuff they never did lose them again. He truly was the man that turned these average men into professional solders.
