Winter

January Color Focus: Blue and White

Igloo Picture

Cut out an igloo shape out of blue paper.(don't forget the opening for the doorway)Next have children cover the entire igloo with white paper squares that represent ice blocks. The children enjoy trying to fit them all on...kind of like a puzzle and they are very cute!

White and Blue Pictures

Have children use q-tip soaked with bleach to draw on dark blue tissue paper. The bleach takes the color out of the tissue paper and creates a really nice "snowscape picture". (Be sure to use very small amounts of bleach with the children.I use baby food jar lids to put my bleach in.By doing this, you can prevent any spills that might be a real mess!)

Laced Mitten

Cut out the shape of a mitten out of poster board.Use a hole punch to make holes along the outside edges of the mitten.Have the children lace the mitten with yarn. This activity coordinates well with the story of "The Mitten".

Milk Carton Ice Blocks

Collect about 50 small size empty milk cartons.(the type they use in public schools for lunch) Press the top portion down and use masking tape to secure it so that you form a block shape with the milk carton. Have the children help you cover the milk cartons with masking tape. After the cartons are covered with masking tape the children can paint them with white paint.Presto! You have ice blocks for igloo building. These are a fun addition to your block area during the winter months.
