Comparison of two quantities of the same kind will result in a ratio.
A ratio is unaltered if all its terms are multiplied or divided by the same number.

Find the ratio of:
50 cents and $1.75
Convert dollar to cents = $1.75 x 100 = 175 cents
Ratio = 50 : 175
Reduce them by dividing both by 25
Ratio = 2 : 7

Simplify:
5/8 : 1/2
Multiply both terms by the LCM of 8 and 2
LCM of 8 and 2 = 8
(5/8) x 8 : (1/2) x 8
Ratio = 5 : 4

Divide $850 in the ratio of 9 : 8 to Person C and Person D
Ratio = 9 : 8 (9 + 8 = 17)
Person C's share = (9/17) x $850 = $450
Person D's share = (8/17) x $850 = $400

If A : B = 2 : 6 and B : C = 3 : 7 find A : B : C
A : B = 2 : 6 and B : C = 3 : 7
A : B = 2 x 3 : 6 x 3
A : B = 6 : 18
B : C = 3 x 6 : 7 x 6
B : C = 18 : 42
A : B : C = 6 : 18 : 42
A : B : C = 1 : 3 : 7

Divide $850 in the ratio of 2 : 3 : 5 to Person A, Person C and Person D
Ratio = 2 : 3 : 5 (2 + 3 + 5 = 10)
Person A's share = (2/10) x $850 = $170
Person C's share = (3/10) x $850 = $255
Person D's share = (5/10) x $850 = $425
