Okay, here's the rest of it.....forgive any mistakes - it's 3:00 a.m. here now, and I was up at 6:00 a.m. this morning (er, yesterday morning, LOL)...

Pairs

Men

Ladies

Intepretive free skates - pairs:

Berezhnaya & Sikharulidze: Wearing a royal blue shirt, beige or yellow tie for him, and a sparkly blue dress for her, they skated to their familiar and fun Santana medley from COI last season. The SBS double axels were very fine. There was a great spin position where Elena holds her foot and in a split position while Anton spins her around. There was a nice lift with a backflip dismount. But Elena took a bad fall on a throw triple sal, fell forward, and may have smacked her chin. Anton basically rallied for both of them, and skated this program with as much attitude as he could muster. Elena looked scared and seemed to just want to get off the ice.

Ina & Zimmerman: Wearing a sparkly burgundy shirt for him with black pants, and a plastic looking burgundy dress for her, they skated to "My Baby You" by Marc Anthony. The throw triple sal was very good! SBS double axels were good. Death spiral was good, loved their he-in-spread-eagle-position-she-draped-over-him move. Speed in the combo spin. Nice program!

Shen & Zhao: Wearing what had to be one of the ugliest costumes ever seen, LOL....reminded me of Stannick Jeannette's green Skeletor costume from last year. This one is perhaps best described as purple spray paint on plastic light blue bodysuits. They skated to horribly cut music - "Moonlight Sonata" - then to something modern - reverts back to "Moonlight" and more Beethoven. Death spiral was good. Triple twist - wow! Throw triple sal - good! Nice star lift, SBS double axels, good. SBS double axel/double toes - good! Not a lot of speed to their skating.

Interpretive free skate - men's:

Todd Eldredge: Skating to his excellent long program from last year, "The 13th Warrior," Todd wore last year's costume as well. He started with a quad toe (we thought it might have been two-footed because of the ice spray, but Tracy Wilson told us later it was good). Then he followed this with a triple axel/double toe combination, followed by a triple lutz and then another triple axel. Great and superb spins, lovely camel spins, Russian splits. Very good presentation. Rock solid.

Todd lands his first quad jump in competition!
Alexei congratulated Todd backstage on his first quad before Alexei skated his own long program. How sweet!

Steven Cousins: Wearing his multi-colored purple, green, and orange print shirt with black pants, Steven performed his SOI program from last year. He stepped out of his triple lutz. He did a backwards somersault on the ice, not a backflip. Crowd liked the sass in the program, but it was weak on tech difficulty, of course.

Alexei Yagudin: Skating to the "Gladiator" soundtrack, and carrying a prop knife in each hand which he never put down, he wore a different "Gladiator" costume than the one he debuted in Sun Valley. (To see what it looked like, click here! )This one could best be described as more conservative, if any gladiator-type costume could ever be described as conservative, LOL... This one has a short maroon cape on one shoulder, black on one side of his shirt/gold and silver on the other, black pants.

He started with what we thought was a triple toe intended to be a quad toe, but perhaps it was a triple flip, as he performed a triple toe later in the program. He followed this with a triple axel he stepped out of, followed by a triple loop and triple toe. Nice spread eagle. Great butterflies. Lots of drama in the program, including dying on ice. Footwork was very good and difficult. Pancake and scratch spins were nice. There was an interesting slide move. I've seen this program skated with more passion, and I missed all the extra butterflies and dance leaps from the Sun Valley version, but it was very good.

Ilia Kulik: Wearing what I would call a scarecrow costume, basically brown burlap looking, LOL, with colorful patches here and there, along with cool sunglasses, Ilia skated to the techno "Rock It." This is an SOI show program, but he added the triples. Started with a nice triple lutz, death drop, triple flip with wonky landing, good triple axel (?), stepped out of the triple toe. Not totally confident in my jump calls here, as I didn't write them all down while I was watching the skating. Very sure of the triple lutz being good, LOL, and a step out on something else. Lots of interesting dance moves/footwork in this program, best described as robotic, including a sort of chin stand move. Interesting split move down on the ice. Besti squat. Big crowd pleaser!

Interpretive free skate - ladies:

Yuka Sato: Wearing a deep blue costume and skating to a ballad with vocals, Yuka started with an overroated first jump - didn't catch what it was. Triple toe and double axel were good. Ina Bauer was very nice. Triple sal was good. Yuka has a very gentle and lyrical quality to her skating I always like.

Lu Chen: Skated to Indian sounding music with sitar and tabla drums, which may have been Beatles/George Harrison music. She was wearing one of her SOI costumes - black halter top with black pants. I think she started with a triple toe. She completed a double axel and then singled her loop jump. Wonky triple sal. Technically better than I expected. I want my "Butterfly Lovers" Lu Chen back... (sniff)....

Irina Slutskaya: Dressed in a flowy and pretty white and green (Kim said it was blue, LOL) costume, and skating to soft, romantic piano music, Irina started with a very nice triple lutz, followed by a good double axel, triple loop, and triple sal. Can't ask much more than that, LOL. Beautiful spins - lots of speed and nice positions. Very nice program!

Michelle Kwan: Dressed in her beautiful pale pink costume with lacy silver at the top, Michelle skated to a soft, pretty ballad with vocals of "If I could Change the World." Started with a nice double axel, followed by a double loop, triple lutz, double sal, and triple toe/double toe. Beautiful camel/Y-spin/cross foot spin combination, along with her very nice Charlotte. Her obligatory and wonderful inside/outside edge spiral. Spread eagle was very nice. Typical Michelle Kwan performance - deep immersion into the mood of the music, and soft, light jumps.

Maria Butyrskaya: When she came out in the warm ups, I almost didn't recognize her. Covering her blonde hair with a brunette wig and a silver headband, Maria was dressed in a sapphire blue costume with silver Egyptian looking designs, and skating to some vaguely middle eastern sounding music. She started with an overrotated triple lutz. There were lots of Egyptian looking hand movements. Triple loop was also wonky - triple toe and double axel were fine. Her spins were good - I liked the cross foot spin and the illusion spin. I think this program could work for her, but it still seems new.

My final conclusions? Some of the judging seemed a little strange.

I love B & S as much as the next person, and, yes, they have tremendous speed, unison, flow, great lifts, yadda, yadda, yadda.....but how many huge mistakes can you make and still beat a respectable and solid program? Apparently, quite a few....I wouldn't have minded so much if presentation had carried the day - these are interpretive programs, after all - but when only one the parties is actually showing some presentation skill, then I think something is a little off....

Ladies could have gone the other way, but not likely. Irina sure has the technical chops, and she has a lovely style as well. But Michelle is Michelle, LOL....I think the judges made the right choice, but I think it was closer than the marks would lead you to believe.

Men was about right. I think the placements ended up where they belonged.
