Hunting

"I'm not a hunter, I'm a wildlife population control specialist." Hunting: They Hunt in Packs (meaning in a group). They use there K9 teeth to eat and gnaw through the thick hide of a moose, elk, and/or deer. Wolves will not even follow injured prey into another wolf packs territory. Instead, they will abandon the chase and leave the prey for the other pack to hunt, kill, and eat. Wolves only hunt weak, old, and/or injured prey. They would first find the weak, old, and/or sick one, then wear it out, by making it run as well as snapping at it, growling at the prey, and trying to trip it up. Then when they finally pull it down to the ground, the Alpha eats first, then it goes by ranks whoever the next is to eat. Wolves normally feed on elk, bison, deer, rabbits, moose, caribou, and whatever they can get. Mother wolves bring food for there fast young growing pups. What the adult wolf will do will eat a full stomach of food, then bring it to the pups. The pups then stick their noses in the wolf's mouth and the adult wolf will regurgitate the food up so the pups may eat. This only happens when the pups are to young to go hunting and eat raw big pieces of meat. An adult wolf can eat as much as 20 pounds of meat at a time. Wolves can survive with out eating for 2 weeks. Fierce as wolves may seem, most of their prey escapes. Less than 10% of wolf hunting is successful. Why? Deer and caribou can outrun a wolf and/or wolves. Moose may fight back. That's 1200 pounds of animal with sharp antlers and heavy hooves, enough to crush a wolf's skull. Food Storage Sometimes wolves will bury/store their food by placing it in what is called a 'cache' and covering it up. When hunting is difficult and food is scare, they will un-dig their food back up and eat. When there is no more food in the cache, the wolf will urinate where the food was burryed to indicate to others there is no more food within. When it snow's, the ground acts like a refrigurator and keeps the meat/food cool and good to eat. ::BACK::
