Tree Pruning: Proper branch removal encourages healthy healing of the scar and discourages insect and disease problems. When removing branches greater than two inches in diameter:
- Undercut the branch 1/3 of the way through approximately 10" away from the trunk.
- Make a second cut several inches out from the undercut through the top side of the branch. The branch will then fall.
- Final cut is made at the point where the branch joins the branch collar.
- Do not use tree paint to seal the wound.
Tree Removal: To remove ladder fuels or dead or hazard trees, or to increase spacing among trees, take the following approach:
- Cut a notch equal to 1/3 of the tree's diameter on the side the tree is to fall. Start the cut at a comfortable working height.
- Make the back cut on the opposite side approximately two inches above the notch cut.
- Block the downed tree to prevent rolling.
- If using a chain saw, always remove limbs from a downed tree on the opposite side of the trunk.
- Bucking (cutting the trunk into small sections) should be done while standing upslope of the tree.
- Cut the stump with a final cut as close to the ground as possible.
