Stop by the Grass Valley Fire Station on Brighton Street and you're likely to meet a firefighter from the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District.
In an effort to improve services and save money, the Grass Valley and the Nevada County Consolidated fire departments have teamed up to jointly staff the Brighton Street fire station, Station 1.
Under the arrangement, each shift will be staffed with one firefighter each from the Grass Valley and Consolidated fire agencies. The joint staffing of the station began Monday.
Brian Hansen, an engineer recently hired by Grass Valley, is assigned to Station 1.
"It's only to our advantage to work together," Hansen said Wednesday. "It's benefiting the city and the county."
The station is staffed 24 hours a day and responds to calls in the city and the areas of the Consolidated district south and west of the city.
The station will remain busy, predicted Grass Valley Capt. Thomas Browning Wednesday.
"That's going to be the hottest station in the county," he said.
Grass Valley Fire Department firefighters will be rotated every six months between the Brighton Street fire station and Station 2 on Sierra College Drive, Browning said. Station 2 opened Tuesday.
