A Nevada City woman avoided serious injury when she plowed her Chevy Venture minivan into a Grass Valley office building on Monday, authorities said.
Kaaren Hiscox, 52, was pulling into a parking space at the East Brunswick office building at 10565 Brunswick Road at about 3 p.m. when she hit the gas instead of the brakes, said California Highway Patrol Officer David Qualls.
One of the building's support beams was dislodged and narrowly missed crushing Hiscox in the driver's seat, said Spenser Garrett, a fire engineer with Nevada County Consolidated Fire Protection District.
"The use of her seat belts greatly reduced her chances of injury," Qualls said. "The beam could have crushed her skull if she had been thrown forward."
Hiscox was taken by ambulance to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released, a nursing supervisor said.
The accident is under investigation, Qualls said.
