Two fires caused significant damage in Nevada County during the weekend, but there were no injuries, fire officials said.
Firefighters arrived at 15894 Shebley Road off Highway 174 near Chicago Park on Sunday and found a two-story, four-bedroom residence ablaze, said Peardale-Chicago Park Fire Protection District's Capt. Howard Drummond.
Homeowner Tom Greene's daughter was asleep and alone in the house when the fire started before 7:30 a.m., Drummond said. She was awakened by the smoke alarm and ran to a garage to call dispatch, he said.
The fire burned from a deck, up an outside wall and into the attic, Drummond said. The fire caused extensive damage to a room in the attic and to many antiques stored in another room in the attic, he said.
Firefighters arrived in time to save a large part of Greene's baseball-card collection, Drummond said.
The majority of the fire was contained to the upper portion of the house, Drummond said. The fire was out at about 11 a.m., he said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, Drummond said.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Station 30 from Colfax, Grass Valley City Fire Department and the Ophir Hill Fire Protection District also responded to the fire.
A fire on the ground floor of the Sierra Nevada Children's Services offices at 256 Buena Vista St. in Grass Valley, near Winchester Street, caused extensive damage Saturday at about 5:30 a.m., fire officials reported.
The two-story building was engulfed in smoke, but the majority of burn damage was contained to one room, said Tom Webb, Grass Valley Fire Department fire engineer.
The estimate on the damage was $75,000 to the building and $75,000 to the contents, Webb said.
The blaze apparently started in an employee lounge, said Wayne Lewis, an on-scene manager for Servicemaster, a fire and disaster clean-up business, on Sunday.
The fire was contained at about 6 a.m., a dispatch report said, and all firefighters returned to their stations by 7:41 a.m.
Living across the street at 255 Buena Vista, Joyce Rowe said the vibrations from the fire trucks made her think her house was falling apart.
"There were three big engines and they all had their nozzles aimed at" the Children's Services building, Rowe said.
Nevada County Consolidated Fire District also responded to the fire.
