North San Juan's second fire of the summer burned almost 2 acres on Tuesday, injured a firefighter and nearly claimed a carport. The cause wasn't immediately reported.
Reported at 1:45 p.m., the fire started near School Street, about 200 feet east of Highway 49, and destroyed a batch of blackberry bushes wedged between the trailer park and cemetery, said North San Juan Fire Chief Boyd Johnson.
A California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection firefighter, whose name wasn't available, suffered burns on his elbow. Two horses nearby had to be evacuated, but they weren't hurt, and about 50 residents looked on as air tankers dropped retardant.
Along with firefighters from North San Juan and CDF, a U.S. Forest Service engine crew also responded. The cause remains under investigation.
On July 24, a Pacific, Gas and Electric Co. boom truck accidentally started a two-acre fire across the highway from the post office.
