Firefighters extinguish a fire in a trash compactor behind Kmart in Grass Valley just after 5 p.m. Thursday. Flames spread to a trailer containing compacted trash, but it wasn't immediately clear what caused the fire, Grass Valley Fire Capt. Tom Browning said. Customers and employees evacuated and remained outside about 90 minutes. Crews separated the compactor from the trailer, extinguished the flames, and set up fans to keep smoke from entering the store. Grass Valley, Nevada County Consolidated and Ophir Hill crews responded.
