Three children and a mother were hospitalized Thursday after a Glenbrook Basin crash.

One of the children was sitting in the mother's lap when their Mercury Capri collided with a Dodge pickup on Brunswick Road east of Sutton Way, according to witnesses. The crash occurred about 5:20 p.m. and delayed the homeward commute.

The children, woman and their male driver were returning to Rollins Lake, where they were living in a truck, according to Justin Butler of Grass Valley, who saw the crash.

"It's kind of unfortunate that something like this would happen to someone who has nothing already," said Butler, who was visiting his father at nearby AutoZone when the crash occurred. The driver of the Capri and the victims' names weren't immediately available.

Grass Valley Police Sgt. Michael Hooker said the driver of the Mercury Capri was at fault. "He pulled into traffic," Hooker said. "You have to yield no matter what."

David Higbee of Penn Valley said the crash occurred after he stopped on westbound Brunswick, just before the AutoZone parking lot, and waved through the Capri, which had attempted a left turn from the lot onto Brunswick.

Higbee said the Capri driver didn't look to see if the other lanes were clear before attempting the turn. "He just barreled out," he said.

The driver of the truck, Tranquilino G. Ramo, a musician from Spokane, Wash., said the Capri pulled in front of him.

"He just came right on out...Boom!," said the 64-year-old Ramo, who was on his way to perform at Quail Ridge Senior Living on Sutton Way.

The injured were fitted with neck braces, and the woman had a head cut. They were transported to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital.

Grass Valley police responded to the crash along with the Grass Valley Fire Department, Nevada County Consolidated Fire District and Sierra Nevada Ambulance.
