A south Nevada County fire that claimed more than 80 acres of grassland and oak trees remained under investigation Monday night.
Firefighters contained the blaze by 4 p.m., less than two hours after it began spreading east from the east side of Camp Far West Reservoir, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
A CDF air attack crew helped direct air tankers and ground crews to the blaze, which burned through ranch land near McCourtney and Perimeter roads, and White Oak and Big Spring drives.
"We were only six to seven minutes away," CDF Air Attack Capt. Russ Rogers said. "That helped contribute to holding the fire until the ground troops could get in there and contain it."
Besides CDF, firefighters from Nevada County Consolidated, Nevada City, Penn Valley, Ophir Hill, Higgins Area and Washington Ridge also responded.
Crews were expected to work into the night putting out hot spots. There were no injuries or damaged buildings.
