3 Teens Injured in Single-Car Crash
By Doug Mattson
A 14-year-old girl remains in critical condition after she crashed a car in Nevada City Monday night, injuring herself and two passengers.
Meanwhile, an investigation is looking into why the girl allegedly was driving the Chevy Camaro Z-28, which slammed into a tree on Gold Flat Road.
"After all, she's a 14-year-old kid who doesn't have a driver's license, obviously," Nevada City Police Chief Lou Trovato said Tuesday.
The girl went by helicopter to Sutter Roseville Medical Center with internal bleeding.
Her passengers, 18-year-old Shaun Davis and a 13-year-old girl, were in fair condition at Sutter Roseville after going there by ambulance, a supervising nurse said.
The girls aren't being named because they are minors.
At about 11:30 p.m. Monday, the Camaro was near Sneath Clay Road headed toward the Golden Center Freeway when it missed a curve, skidded and struck a tree on the driver's side door, Trovato said.
The girl passenger was in the right front seat, and King was in the rear right seat, according to the police chief.
Trovato said Davis suffered a head injury and possibly damage to his spleen, and the 13-year-old girl broke her back, "but she seems to be stable also."
The car is registered to a man whose address is same as the alleged driver's, according to Trovato.
He said one of many aspects of the investigation is how she got the keys.
The chief said he was also unclear if any of the three teens were wearing seat belts.
Along with the police, the Nevada City Fire Department, 49er Fire Protection District, Nevada County Consolidated Fire District, Sierra Nevada Ambulance and CALSTAR helicopter responded.
