Tragedy Strikes Nevada County: NCCFD Called Into Action

At approximately 11:25 hours on the 10th day of January, 2001, Nevada County Consolidated Station 85 with Duty Officers, along with Sierra Nevada Ambulance, responded to a report of shots fired at the Lyon’s Restaurant in Grass Valley, CA. Station 85 is located ¼ of a mile north of Lyon’s on Nevada City Highway, however at the time of dispatch, the engine and crew were not in quarters. Fire and EMS units responded from south of Lyon’s, driving through the Brunswick Basin, and were told to stage out of the area. The only information given to staging units came from a California Department of Forestry Battalion Chief who had moved in with law enforcement. His sketchy reports drew a picture of a crime scene which no one was prepared for: One confirmed fatality inside the restaurant, one victim critically wounded in the parking lot behind, and the suspect still at large. Additional reports put the gunman’s location close to Engine 85’s staging area, and in a few chaotic moments, fire and EMS units relocated and were ultimately called in to aid in the immediate treatment and transport of their victim.
It was determined that the Lyon’s incident was the second half of alleged gunman Scott Harlan Thorpe’s shooting rampage. Minutes before his attack on Lyon’s, Thopre alledgedly walked into the county Behavorial Health Department, located within the county Health, Education and Welfare building in Nevada City, where he claimed the lives of 2 people, and inflicted injuries on an additional two people.
The employees of the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District would like to express their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the victims involved.
