Scripture and Commentary:
Isaiah 29:13
Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their hearts far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

The people in Isaiah's day claimed to belong to God, but they were disobedient and merely went through the motions of worship; therefore God would bring vengeance upon them. Religion had become so routine instead of real.

This sounds so similar to our modern day churches where religious routines, pitiful pious programs, showmanship like worship, pretentious attitudes and theological abstract sermons that are designed to appeal to the head while missing the heart, has become the rule rather then the exception. Unfortunately, many believers over the years have gotten caught up in legalistic holiness, emphasizing outward and external norms, which has turned them away from true worship and has caused them to become as those who have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. (Romans 10:2-3) Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: (II Timothy 3:5)

Jesus quoted Isaiah's condemnation of Israel's hypocrisy when he spoke to the Pharisees, the religious leaders of his day (Matthew 15:7-9; Mark 7:6-7).

We are all capable of hypocrisy. Often we slip into routine forms of worship, which are disgustingly grotesque and an abomination to God. If we want to be called God's people, we must be obedient and worship him honestly and sincerely.

The people's mouths spoke the right things, but their inner nature was far from God.
John 4:23-24 say's "But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is Spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Christ makes worship a matter of the heart. Our worship must engage our spirit in the pursuit of truth. That's the kind of people the Father is looking for, those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship. Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, and their true selves, in adoration, and not just from empty lips.

Points to Ponder:
1. Is your worship genuine and real?
2. Do you have the Holy Spirit's help?
3. How does the Holy Spirit help us worship?
The Holy Spirits prays for us (Romans 8:26), and teaches us the words of Christ.

Suggested Prayer for True Worshippers:
Father you are strikingly holy, overwhelmingly, awesomely, inexpressibly holy. You are completely separate and absolutely free from sin and evil, totally good and pure. You are perfect light, perfect truth, perfect justice and perfect love. There is nothing that can be compared to you; there are no words that adequately describe you. You cannot be explained, only exalted; you cannot be analyzed, only adored. Father you are not just holy, but you are "Holy, holy, holy." What else can I say? your splendor is more than we can bear. Being in your presence is completely overpowering. Father forgive us for our pretentious attitudes and our showmanship like worship, please instill in me the heart of a true worshipper. I ask these things in that matchless name of you precious son Jesus Christ, Amen!
