Seashells, My BellsPitseleh is a song by Elliott Smith. Kind of a sad song, but I like how the word pitseleh sounds. I first heard of ES when I saw the movie, Goodwill Hunting (one of my favorite movies). He sings Miss Misery and Between the Bars (though the movie used an orchestral version of BTB). It took me awhile to find out who sang the songs, I tried to find them on Scour. Then I found a used copy of XO, an album released in 1998. There is some really good guitar work. His songs are a bit melancholy, but he tells some good stories. According to message boards I follow, a lot of fans of Smashing Pumkins also like Elliott Smith. Something I thought was interesting, I wouldn't necessarily compare them, but then I don't listen to alot of SP songs. His latest album came out in April, it's called Figure 8. The UCD Aggie gave it an A :) Son of Sam is my favorite song, I haven't listened to the rest of the cd that much actually. Listening to Ani DiFranco almost all the time. Elliott Smith is coming back out to California in June. June 5th and 6th he is playing at the Fillmore in San Francisco. So if anyone wants to go... And I have a link to a great ES site.Deep Dish was the first song by Ani DiFranco that I fell in love with. I really like songs with horns and strings, lots of various instruments. Little Plastic Castle is an awesome cd. I also own To The Teeth (the last album she released, the third cd she made in 1999, is that not awesome!), Dilate, and Not a Pretty Girl. I saw Ani last month (April) when she came to UC Davis. Best concert I have ever been to, thus far. I expect only another Ani DiFranco concert will ever be as good. I saw the concert with Anne and Brianne. We now have three posters up in our apartment, even though two are duplicates. In January 2000, I went to the Crest Theater in Sacramento to see Vertical Horizon, Guster, and Stroke 9 perform. VH was awesome. I was faintly familiar with the song, Everything You Want. I kept asking my friends what VH sang. So I basically had no idea what I was getting into when I went to the concert. It was a great experience. The crowd sang with them for Send It Up, and of course there was a great hoopla when they played EYW. After their set, VH came out to sign autographs. I bought a shirt and had them sign in. Sean Hurley signed Anne's arm. We are still kicking ourselves for not sneaking in a camera. I shook Matt's hand and briefly spoke with Ed and Kieth. Got a hug from Sean. He said he was going to see Being John Malkavich later that night, and we teased him about being recognized. He shrugged it off, said he had a sweatshirt with a hood. This was before the band really made it big, before they were number one on VH1's top ten count down. Can't wait until they come out to the west coast again. Guster was also entertaining. The best part about Stroke 9's show was when they played Little Black Backpack, because everyone knew the song. Luke Esterkyn would sing a line, then let the crowd finish the verse. Saw Ani DiFranco a second time at the Mountain Aire festival in Angel's Camp (small town, about an hour east of Stockton). It was great, an outdoor concert. Spearhead played before Ani. He's very political, his music was mostly rap, R&B type. His last song was something about all the freaky people in the world, and the biggest of them all (I'm sure he phrased it better) being Ani DiFranco. So then she comes out on the stage, with her huge black platform shoes and a cut-off righteous babe tank top. Michael Franti towered over Ani, but she has such awesome stage presence. It was great seeing them go back and forth, singing to the moment. Later Ani started her show, opening with (oops, I forgot, must ask Bri or Anne). The concert was, of course, too short. But after it was really cool, the other musicians that played earlier that day, from Spearhead and Ozomatly, came out again and started jamming with Ani. Unfortunately Ani didn't have her guitar, I would have liked to have seen her break out with random accompaniment. Then, they all paraded through the crowd. Michael Franti led, Ani and Julie followed, then Jason Mercer and the rest of the band (I will get back to you with their names, just for the sake of me sounding like I do know what I am talking about). I got close enough to touch Ani, but I didn't cause that just seemed weird and inappropriate. I wish we had some film left though. We were able to sneak in a camera, got some pretty good shots of the band during the concert. They will eventually make it up onto my page. Brianne will probably have them up sooner, since they were taken with her camera and I don't have copies yet. Next concert will be Blink 182 June 20th. I have heard some mixed comments on their concerts, I hope they are good live. ANI DiFRANCO- "With more conscious access to her id than most women her age, DiFranco writes effortlessly subversive music. Her complex and contentious love songs - haunted by lonely nights on the road, the recurrent spectre of abortion, sectacular lusts and losses - have the disruptive effect of computer viruses. More anarchist than feminist, she provokes listeners on levels that cut deeper than gender. Far from seeking comfort in the smug insularity of radical movements, she prefers the heretic's role, questioning everything...Onstage and off, Ani DiFranco uses her cult of personality to turn the public's attention toward something more important than herself."

I'm a sophmore...I mean junior, yay, so what if it is summer. Anyway, I go to UC Davis and I am majoring in microbiology. I want to work for the Center of Disease Control, or do something with nutrition when I grow up. My "future" still seems a long way off. Right now I don't even know what I am doing tomorrow. Ah, the bliss of summer. Oh yeah, I am looking for a job... As for hobbies, I play tennis, read, quilt, listen to lots of Ani DiFranco music, collect Calvin and Hobbes comic books, play the piano (well, try), and then study in between, ah but not in summer. My goal is to type the word summer at least 3 more times.
