Author's Note: This is a Christmas fic, but the idea came after the update on December 20, 1999. This is the first 'gift' from my newest muse, Brannan. So blame and flame him if you don't like it! But remember to send the compliments to me! :)
Yet another author's note: This takes place after Journey's End, Part III. But in this version, the rangers landed back on Earth instead of Mirinoi.
"What are you guys gonna do for Christmas?" Kendrix asked her friends excitedly. Her shift for the day was over.
"We are just gonna go catch a movie and watch the parade like we usually do," Mike answered for himself and his little brother. Leo just nodded in response.
"I am gonna create a Christmas robot. That's my dream ever since I was in first grade. I hope I can finally make one, with Alpha's and DECA's help," Damon replied.
"Cool! Maya, Karone, and I are gonna do some more shopping," Kendrix said. That caused the guys to groan and sigh. "What?!"
"Aren't you ever tired of shopping?!" Leo asked. The girls shook their heads.
"Kai, what 'bout you? What are you gonna do for Christmas?" Mike asked with curiosity.
"I'm not sure yet...," he trailed off.
"Hey! You guys wanna help us decorate our room?" Karone asked hopefully.
"Well, how can we turn down such a pretty face. We'll do it, right guys?" Mike answered for his friends again.
"Thanks! Thanks so much you guys!" Karone said, smiling. With that, the rangers left the café and headed toward the ladies' apartment.
As soon as they got there, they located the artificial tree, ornaments, and lights. They settled the tree in a visible corner after they covered every single spot with an ornament or lights. They were very satisfied with their work.
"Thanks so much guys!" the girls said with their greatest gratitude.
"No problem!" they replied with big smiles.
"Hey, why don't we throw a party tomorrow? I mean, it is, after all, the first Christmas after we got off Terra Venture," Leo suggested.
"Great idea," his girlfriend, Kendrix, supported.
"Ok, how about at six o'clock at night?" Damon helped.
"Look guys, I can't come," Kai said all of a sudden.
"You can't come at six? How about six thirty? Or sev--," Karone said, but Kai interrupted her.
"No, it's not the time. I...I just can't come," Kai broke in softly.
"Why? Do you have a shift?" Mike asked. "If you do, I can ask Commander Staton to change it."
"No, Mike, I don't have a shift. It's just that...it's just that...it's just that I don't celebrate Christmas," Kai uttered.
"Oh," the others echoed. Silence filled the room for a few moments.
"Why don't we talk about something else?" Leo spoke up.
"I think we should go to sleep now," Maya said. "I mean, it's been a long day...."
"Yeah. Good idea. Well, Goodnight guys," Karone said.
"Night everyone," they said to each other. The rangers fell asleep immediately, except for Kai.
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, December 25, 1990.
"Merry Christmas, Dad. Merry Christmas, Mom," a young boy said to his parents while handing them their gifts.
"Merry Christmas, Kai," the parents said in return, also handing their son gifts.
"Thanks," Kai managed to say when he eagerly opened his presents. The one from his dad revealed to be a pair of rollerblades, and the one from his mom is a brand new watch.
All of the sudden, there are some noises. Gunshots, two to be exact. Kai involuntarily closed his eyes and covered his ears with his hands. Moments later, he opened his eyes and there are two bodies laying on the ground. The bodies were his parents. He touched the back of their bodies. Fresh blood covered his fingers.
"Mom? Dad?" he whispered, not wanting to believe what had just happened. Tears started to fill his eyes and raced down his cheeks. The sobs turned into loud cries in seconds. Some of his next-door neighbors came to see what happened after they heard the gunshots. One of them called the police, who arrived in a few minutes along with an ambulance.
They got his parents to the nearest hospital as soon as possible, but it was already too late. Kai's parents, Dennis and Evelyn Chen, have passed away.
Kai was sobbing quietly on his bed. It has been nine years ever since his parents passed away. That was also the reason why he doesn't celebrate Christmas. He tried to celebrate when he was twelve and thirteen, but every time he tried the memories come back to him automatically. Why does it have to happen to me? Why? It's not fair! Mom, Dad, I missed you! he thought to himself mentally. He soon fell asleep with his worst memory.
Kai was the last one to wake up on Christmas Day. After he realizes the time, which was 10 AM, he quickly got up, brushed his teeth, and got dressed. Then he was walking out the door, but Leo managed to catch him.
"Where are you going?" his leader asked.
"Somewhere. I won't be back until 2 PM at least. Merry Christmas guys," he replied.
"Is he okay?" Maya asked her friends.
"I don't know. Look, why don't I go after him?" Karone offered.
"Ok, but be careful," Mike said to his girlfriend.
"Ok. Bye you guys," she replied.
"Bye," the others said in unison.
Karone managed to catch up to where Kai was. She was, fortunately, very swift and has great agility, like her brother. She also managed to be unseen by Kai. Then, a few minutes later, she realized they were at a florist shop. Kai went in and came back a few minutes later with a bouquet that contained a few lilies, daises, sunflowers, roses, and carnations.
"Why would he want flowers?" Karone said quietly to herself. Then, she followed Kai to the cemetery. He kneeled in front of two graves. She read the engraved words on the tombstones. The names are Dennis and Evelyn Chen. She can also clearly see the date they passed away: December 25, 1990.
"So that's why he doesn't celebrate Christmas," Karone whispered to herself, but this time Kai heard it. He looked around.
"Huh? Who's there?" he asked in every direction. Then, Karone walked out to his sight from behind a tree. "Karone?"
"Yeah, it's me. I followed you because we are worry about you. Are you...are you okay?" she asked politely.
Kai took a deep breath before answering that question. "No, I'm not okay," he started, "I miss them. I miss my parents. They died exactly nine years ago. For the past nine years, I've been trying to find out who killed them. But I still have no clue who did this," he continued.
"I completely understand, Kai. Andros and I lost our parents when I was just seven, even though I don't know about it because I was Astronema," Karone said.
"But you guys have revenge! I didn't! I don't even know who did it!" Kai broke in sadly.
"Well, at least I know what it feels like without my parents," Karone comforted him. "But that doesn't mean you shouldn't celebrate Christmas," she continued.
"See. Every time I try to celebrate, those memories come back to me automatically. I can't control them," he explained.
"Why don't you just forget about that this year and try to enjoy yourself? Just give it one more try," Karone suggested.
"Ok, I guess," Kai replied. Then, he said bye to his parents and they headed back to their room.
"Hey guys, guess who's back?" Karone said in excitement when they arrived at the room. Then Kai appeared at the doorway.
"Kai! How are you buddy?" Mike asked happily.
"I'm okay. You guys care if I join the party?" he said.
"We would love you to join!" Kendrix replied for her friends with a smile.
Kai explained to his friends about why he never celebrates Christmas ever since nine years ago. They talked, ate, laughed, sang, and opened presents for the rest of the night. They also helped Damon build an interactive Christmas robot. The robot can bake cookies, decorate Christmas trees, sing Christmas carols, and wrap and unwrap presents.
This was a Christmas that he will never forget. Instead of reminding
him
his sad past, this year's Christmas refreshed Kai's memories about the
happy
side of the holy holiday.
