SONGGWANGSA - KOREA
Songgwangsa ( means "Spreading Pine Temple" ) is the third of the Three Jewel Temples in Korea. It is located in Seungju to the east of Gwangju. Venerable Hyerim first built a small temple during late Silla, but Ven. Chinul (1158-1210 ) was responsible for building up the temple. From this site Ven. Chinul's meditation teachings began to spread like a pine. Songgwangsa was destroyed during the Hideyoshi Invasion and rebuilt many times but it never returned to its former glory. In 1988, the monk-in-charge worked hard to re-establish the former greatness of the temple by building it up according to the original foundations. Fourteen buildings were reconstructed including the magnificent Main Hall.
