JOKHANG MONASTERY - TIBET
The Jokhang, or "House of the Lord," was first built in the mid-7th century by the King Songtsen Gampo, but the structure is largely the result of reconstruction in the 17th century, commissioned by the Fifth Dalai Lama. Located in the east, facing to the west, it is a four storeyed Temple with splendid golden roofs. It has architecture feature of Tang Dynasty and also assimilated very much features from both Nepalese and Indian Buddhist Temples. The Jokhang houses the Jowo Buddha, a Buddhist sculpture brought as part of the dowry of the Chinese Princess Wencheng upon her arrival in Tibet to be married with the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. |
