How it all began...
One of the byproducts of the Munich Agrement of 1938 was the establishment of an independent Slovakian state under Jozef Tiso .Not surprisingly he was loyal Nazi ally. So when Germany invaded Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, he committed the Slovak Army's Fast Division, armed with Czechoslovakian equipment, to fight alongside them. On August 12, 1944, Tiso proclaimed martial law in Slovakia, and gave the German army his consent to occupy the country on August 29. But in Slovakia, the hills and forests were teemed with partisans bands, made up of army deserters and prison-camp escapees, who tried to prevent the occupation. These soldiers were in touch with Czechoslovakian government-in-exile led by Dr. Edvard Benes. They fought until October 1944, when the German soldiers took Banska Bystrica, captured lots of partisans, and took many of their weapons.
