My Buggy Re-Build Project
The Rear End Parts...

Off Road Racing

OK!! Now ya wanna see the new stuff for the rear end??? All of the parts have finally arrived so as soon as I can get into Velocity Fabrication's schedule, the project can begin. In the mean time I can start assembling the front beam assembly, and the rear arms w/micro-stubs & disk brakes.

Well, lets take a look at the new goodies...

Rear Suspension Small Parts

OK, here we go!! This is a picture of some of the small parts of the rear suspension. I have close-ups of the other parts so you can see them in detail.

I know most of you know what all these parts are, but for the rest I'll explain.

On the left is the new set of CNC cutting/turning brakes & handles, then in the middle is one of the set of 4 930 CV joints (McKenzie's race prepped) and one set of flanges & boots of 4 sets, and finally one set (one out) of Eibach springs for the 14" Fox racing coil over shocks.

The Rear 3x5 Trailing Arms

Here are a couple of shots of the Rear Trailing Arms.

I ordered these arms through McKenzie's in Anaheim, they were fabricated by Suspensions Unlimited in Anaheim.

This rear suspension should have about 18" of travel. I figure if I limit the travel a little, I'll have less wear on the CV's helping them last longer.

For a play car, this will be plenty.

Another View

Here is a closeup of the inside of the left rear arm to see the weld work and construction.

These arms are built for Micro-stub axles, and surprisingly they are less expensive than for type 1 or type 2 stub axles.

OK, the brakes cost a little more, but the arms end up being cheaper because you don't need as many extra parts installed on the arm.

Another Close-Up

This is a closeup of the right trailing arm from the top view. This view is shown with the bushings & heim joint installed.

These arms are very well built, and look like very nice weld work.

I'm really looking forward to feeling the difference in the first ride in this car.

Urethane Trany Mount Kit

This is a picture of McKenzie's pre fabed 002 & 091 Urethane Tranny mount kit.

This mount is supposed to raise the engine for increased ground clearance by mounting the Transmission at a 10° angle which also helps with shift rod alignment.

Since the shift rod location is different from the earlier trans to the newer trans this should help.

I like this idea better than using the jockey shifter adapter which would increase the shifter play.

We'll see how well it works when it's all said & done.

930 Drive Flanges

Here is a close up of the drive flanges for the 002 transmission for 930 CV joints.

I guess that pretty much explains that picture. Just some small parts I forgot to put in the earlier picture. Oops...

Used 002 Transmission

I got this transmission by mistake. It was supposed to be an 091 transmission, it was pulled out of a 79 bus. I guess the previous owner had swapped it out with an 002.

After talking with some of the guys at RaceDezert.com, and a couple of race transmission shops I have found an 002 is a considerably cheaper transmission to use than an 091.

After finding that out, it was pretty much a no brainer to go this route. I can get a full race prepped 002 tranny for a third of the cost of a partially race ready 091, with gears better suited for my engine

I'll just be using this trans for mock up and fab work, then use it as a core for the race prepped Tranny, then I shouldn't need to worry about any tranny problems for a while.

Freshly Rebuilt Tranny

Well, after taking the tranny to Rancho Racing Transmissions in Anaheim, I found out this trans is an 002 case, but it has 091 gearsets inside.

The case may not be quite as strong as an 091, but the gears are stronger than an 002, and it has a stronger ring & pinion.

I had it rebuilt by Rancho, it now has stock 1st & 2nd gears, 3.78 and 2.06 respectivly, and close ratio 3rd & 4th 1.63 and 1.22 with a 4.57 ring & pinion with a super diff. They also installed the 930 drive flanges.

With the tranny being finished before the fab work now we have a nice clean & dry tranny to do all the mock up & fabrication with. Much cleaner & lighter to deal with.

14" Fox Racing Shocks

These are some Bad Boys!!!. LoL This is just one of the pair that ought to make the back of this thing ride like a dream.

Fox Racing Shocks with 14 inches of travel and 7/8' shafts with the previously pictured dual rate Eibach springs to soak up the bumps and an external reservoir for added oil capacity to help keep them cool.

With these puppies on this thing it's really gunna be able to haul the mail on just about any rough dirt road or anywhere else...

...and I can't wait to get enough speed to catch some air to test out the suspension, and to take on some rough stuff. Oh yeah!!, I can feel the hairs raising on the back of my neck again just thinking about it!!! Bring it ON!!!

Kartek Rear Disk Brakes

... OK, speaking of hauling the mail, all that stuff will make the car ride & handle better which will make the car be able to go through the rough stuff a lot faster... BUT!!! the stock brakes, well... They Suck!!!

So, how about some disk brakes out back too, to put the WHOA on this pony.

These are Kartek rear disk brakes with Wilwood 4 piston calipers for Micro-stub axles. These ought to bring the speed to a stop a lot faster than the old stock drum brakes...

...Especially after going through the water crossings.

Micro-Stub Axel Side

This is another shot of the same rear brakes from the stub axle side.

I like the idea that if, and that's a BIG IF the stub axle was ever to break, with this setup, the rear wheel would NOT come off the car making it more likely to be able to keep control of the car.

These stub axles are much shorter which reduces the stress on them helping prevent them from ever breaking, and also allow for the use of a little longer drive axle reducing the angle of the CV's.

I sure hope so anyway, I wanna play hard in this thing when it's done.

Well, that's all for the rear end parts...

I have decided to wait to order the drive axles until we have the new rear caging done and the tranny mounted so we know for sure how long the axles will need to be instead of guessing & having to do the return & swap game.

The next installment will be the the front suspension assembly then the fab work hopefully it will be going to Velocity Fabrication real soon...

My teeth are hurting from chomping at the bit!!!

**********

Good News!!! I just talked to Jason from Velosity Fabrication this morning 7-10-04 and he is back in town full time now. So my buggy project will be starting real soon... He is coming by for a review and idea/planning session later today.

Right On Jason!! I am Stoked!!!

Check back often because things should be changing here on a regular basis for a while.

More to come as the project begins... Y'all come back now, hear!?!?!?
