Out With The Old...

The old 327 still ran pretty good. It never did quite run the way I thought that it should have. I just never had the time or money to spare to tear it back down to recam it, and what ever else it needed. When I was planning that rebuild, unfortunately, I followed some bad advice for the vehicle it was going in, and the way it was going to be used. As you can see the engine compartment had seen better days. It sure looked good when it was first rebuilt. But over the years, the polish had dulled badly, the paint was turning to powder, except where the oil was leaking on it, and a lot of the parts were starting to rust badly.

When I got this Elky, back in '84 someone had cut the A/C lines coming out of the firewall, instead of undoing the connections. I lived in Orange County, CA at the time so it didn't matter. Now that I live up here in Paso it get's as hot as Phoenix, sometimes even hotter, so that is one of the first things to be fixed in this process.

The kicker was I went out to get in the Elky to go to work one morning. When I started her up, and I put my foot on the brake to shift it in gear, the pedal went right to the floor. New master cylinder time, might as well put in disk brakes too while I'm at it. The search begins...

There has been a problem in the front end for quite a while too, so while I'm changing the front brakes to disk, I might as well rebush the front end too, what the heck it's apart right?

I had already bought the driveline that was going in, all I had to do was load it in the back of the Elky & drive it to the shop where I was going to be working on it. But NOOOOO. So, I had it towed over to the shop, had to load the engine into my Yota truck to haul to the shop. The process begins...

Alright, end of the first week, the old engines out, and the A/C box & lines are fixed.

OK, I guess I'm just a little excited about the A/C is going to work. It just gets so hot here in the summer, that small cab heats up fast!!

Man, is that master cylinder rusted or what? I've got a bunch of cleaning to do too. Ooops, forgive the finger tips, I'm not used to this new camera yet.

I guess I got a little ahead of myself. I should have cleaned & painted the firewall before installing the new master cylinder and vacuum booster. Oh well. I'm just jazzed that things are starting to go back together, There's still a long way to go. I'm just so excited...
