PARASITE INFECTIONS
SCABIES [itch mite]
Dx - CONTAGIOUS! Skin infection caused by microscopic parasite.
Et - Mite burrows under epidermis causing hypersensitivity; trnsferred from contaminated items; poor hygiene.
Ss - Intense itching & inflammation secondary bacterial infections may arise from scratching.
Tx - NO Touching! Treat with mite shampoo. Disinfect after treatment!
Treatment for scabies consists of taking regular showers, then applying over-the-counter 5% permithrin medicated lotion to your whole body, except your head and neck. (DO NOT use scabies medicine containing lindane. It's poisonous.) Don't wash off the lotion for 8 to 12 hours. sometimes it takes 48 hours for the medicine to be effective. Frequently it takes two treatments to get rid of the Scabies mites. Because Scabies are sensitive to heat, you also can try taking a sauna. To avoid re-infection, wash the bedding and clothing of everyone in your family, or where you live, with borax, dry on the hot cycle, sterilize and iron. Vacuum your mattress as well.
LICE [pediculosis]
Dx - CONTAGIOUS! Parasitic skin infection.
Et - A louse feeds on human blood; lays eggs (nits) on hairs or clothing fibers - this is the source of the term, "Nitwit."
Ss - Pruritis [intense itching] from injected irritant. (Similar process with a mosquito).
Variations: (1) head [-capitis]; (2) body [-corporis]; (3) genital [-pubis] ["crab lice"]
Tx - NO TOUCHING! . - Disinfect all contacted linens may survive for 2 weeks in fibers !
Treatment for Lice involves an over-the-counter anti-louse medication that you can use on the infected area, or a shampoo with anti-louse medication in it. Then, take a fine toothed lice comb to remove the "nits" (lice eggs) and dead lice. The best method for treating public lice (crabs) is mechanical removal with a fine-toothed lice comb. Comb daily for about two weeks until no live lice are discovered. Electronic louse combs that act like bug zappers are not more effective. Save your money.
To avoid re-infection, wash with borax and hot water all bedding, clothing, towels, and surfaces that have touched the head or body of the "lousy" person. Dry on the hot cycle, sterilize and iron. Vacuum carpets. Bag other items that cannot be cleaned. Lice cannot survive more than 55 hours without a human host.
