Being the Founder, Publisher and the Editor-in-Chief of California Song Magazine, I'm incredibly proud to debut my special collectors "Anniversary II " issue. I created and launched California Song™ magazine and have always been relentless to overcome the trials and tribulations, twists and turns on that cold, rough, long, dark and lonesome highway called "the music industry".

Everything I've witnessed, learned and experienced for the last three years has literally transformed me into becoming physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and equitably …the "Driver of my own Destiny"! I've now successfully bridged the two legendary musical cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles again, in a way not seen since the demise of BAM magazine!

"The West Is The Best"

I consider it an honor to be favorably acknowledged as the "The One and Only Golden State-Wide" music mag defying all conventional wisdom to achieving real success.

I do it out of admiration for California's long tradition of cultivating "its own backyard" to discover and debut inspired and creative musical genius to the world. I do it out of respect for the "local" singers and musicians who perform in the bars and clubs of California and perpetuate that tradition by being the hardest working bands anywhere. California Song™ magazine knows, "From Today's Garages… Come Tomorrow's Superstars".

Arne Frager is the owner of "The Plant" recording studios in Sausalito, which hosts sessions for Metallica, Primus, Carlos Santana and many others. Arne is fueled by a desire to revitalize the Bay Area/California music scene.

Arne said, "we're making "The Plant" available for independent California-Only record labels and unsigned bands to record a new album inside one of the most legendary recording facilities in the world!"

I believe … it's for this reason, that the true royalty of Rock 'n Roll and it's greatest all-time songwriters have approached and offered California Song™ their exclusive interviews with tremendous enthusiasm and a real willingness to talk openly. Brian Wilson was the first.  Now in our incredible "Anniversary II" issue, the legendary Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger have totally blown me away their exclusive, in depth retrospectives on the songwriting process that created one of the most influential bands in the history of Rock 'n Roll . . . The Doors!!!

"Still One Place To Go"

The real power behind The Doors mystique is the songs, that have a depth and a soul, that describe the indescribable . . . so haunting . . . so transcendent . . . so cinematic . . . so primal . . . so human.  Music created by artists who were in touch and seemingly tapped-in to a higher power. So, that when the songs of The Doors were being played, you felt just be hearing them . . . that you were some tapped-in too!

"I Hear a Very Gentle Sound"

I guess it's because to every individual, the music of The Doors  is so deeply personal!!  The legend and myth surrounding their music seems to remain firmly entrenched in the conscience of fans all around the world.

It's a meaningful part to the 'soundtrack' of our lives, but not just as cool 60's nostalgia.  Doors music stood for something more than just entertainment and even a little more than great, great rock music.

"Witnessing the Wild Breeze"

The true essence of the 60's are defined for me by two people . . . John Lennon and Jim Morrison.  What inspired me were their kindred "say what you think" spirits and their iron-willed commitment to their principles.

These two guys were born Rock and stayed Rock their entire lives.  Never once did they go Corporate.  Never once did they 'sellout' their adherence to their complete refusal to compromise on the truth, nor their conviction towards creative, social and political freedom for all people, not just the privileged or elite.

The Doors music instilled everyone with a certain heartfelt belief that music gave the human spirit something higher to aspire to and reinforced the strength of not having to live a lie.

"The Blue Bus is Callin' Us"

Both John and Jim, especially Jim, had notoriously insolent and intemperate dispositions toward authority figures and the ostentatiously privileged.  They remind people that each voice together speaks louder and no voice is insignificant, but you've got to stand up and say something first!

Appropriately, both John (The Beatles) and Jim (The Doors) used their music to empower, inspire, enlighten and involve everyone everywhere, and Doors music stood for something no less than a revolution to undermine the status quo . . . be it political, spiritual, sexual or musical!  As a Publisher, I was once again reminded of that huge fact in a huge way.

"Tell You 'Bout the Maiden with Raw Iron Soul"

A revolution, I've been told, begins with only person . . . where inspiration becomes an idea . . . but with two people it becomes a plot.

So is it Strange Coincidence or the Hand of Fate that I stopped to flirt with a fine rocker chick on Hollywood Boulevard one afternoon last month and actually have the girl to be one of LA's music scene nobility!  I got to my knees before the lovely and legendary Ms. Tequila Mockingbird.

Anyone who knows Hollywood's music scene over the past 25 years . . . knows of the amazing punk rocker, talent booker, jazz singer, film actress, personal manager, bass player, TV show host, "Doo Dah" parade queen, managing editor and "A-list" bon vivant celebrity rock journalist.

Anyone . . . like Tequila (and there ain't many) who's had Mitch Mitchell as a drummer ("Trouble for Nora" band 1988), played live with Nina Hagen, shimmied with Lemmy and toured as 'Den Mum' to Bad Manners . . . had got to know a thing or two about music and the music biz.

One day, Tequila remarked incidentally to me about the real mentality of the music biz.  "You're either Rock or you're Corporate."  She said.  It seemed innocent enough, except it stayed in my head like a Mantra and has been taken to heart like a Prayer.

"Cancel My Subscription to the Resurrection"

"You're either Rock or you're Corporate", gave me the wisdom I'd been missing to trust my instincts and put faith in my belief, that I was born a "Rocker"!  It's that intrinsic truth that now compels me as Founder, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief to honor the commitment of my principles, be delivering an honest meaningful relevant, "no bullshit" music magazine about music . . . not about fashion, not about glamour, not about celebrities, not about the star-maker machinery!

"Gazing on a City under Television Skies"

McCarley Entertainment Media (ME-Media), Publisher of California Song™ magazine proudly announces the official January 1st 2005 debut of our newest publication . . . SongTalk™ (The songwriter's newspaper).  If that title sounds vaguely familiar to any CalSong readers, it's not your imagination.  The SongTalk™ newspaper once existed as the Hollywood based, in-house periodical of the once prestigious, new defunct, National Academy of Songwriters.  The newspaper was distributed by NAS to eleven countries around the globe.

SongTalk™ is now a registered federal trademark belonging to ME-Media and will be distributed, printed and editorialized in the same manner as when NAS oversaw its operations.  I'll reveal more details closer to the debut date.

"Meet Me at the Back of the Blue Bus"

I've always said that I will never allow California Song™ to become the ultimate arbiter of good taste in music.

I don't decide who makes and who doesn't, YOU DO, but you have to get involved in the process . . . TAKE ACTION.  I've made my declaration to be the driver of the revolution, the one behind the wheel, but it's you the readers of CalSong that have to tell me where you really want to go.

It is intended to be a genuine reflection of you!  A mirror of what's happening in your world as independent music entrepreneurs from California!  I'll work with you, if you want to work with California Song™ magazine.

I'm here to remind you that each voice together speaks louder and that no voice is insignificant, but you've got to stand up and say something first!!

"A Feast of Friends"

As I celebrate the "Anniversary II" issue and look forward to serving the songwriting and live music communities of California for many years to come, I admit I've had difficulties driving my destiny toward and finding my place on the map during the last three years!

Even though my road is paved with good intentions, it's been eight month since my last issue was published only because, as the SOLO driver, I'm the Advertising Director - Billing Manager - Art Director - Production Manager - Promotion & Publicity Director - Distribution Manager - Human Resources Director, as well as the Publisher & Editor in Chief.

Remember, a revolution with only one person is an idea . . . with two people it's a plot . . . but with three people and more, as this July 2004 issue . . . it's transformed into a real conspiracy!

Certainly, I must introduce the esteemed Mr. Jay Eisenberg, the new Director of Advertising and Marketing for California Song™ magazine.  Jay is President/CEO of his own company, Publisher's Representative Inc., an independent advertising sales firm based in Malibu. As a person, the essence of Doors music has totally reinforced a strength and conviction in me with the spirit to aspire to something higher?  As a publisher, I was re-awakened to the pure potentiality of every experience, especially through Robby Krieger's incredibly diverse songwriting!

It's re-affirmed why California Song™ magazine first came into existence.  It got me back in touch and it got California Song™ magazine tapped-in to that higher power!
