Antelope Valley Christian won the Agape League for second year in a row last year and went to the CIF Southern Section finals where they were soundly beaten by eventual State Champion Price. Antelope Valley loses its two star players in John Cho and Jamal Flanigan. They return 5'7" soph guard Jeremiah Nurse; Eun Yoo, 6' soph forward; Phillip Okonma, 6'8" soph center; and, 5' 10" Percy Pickett junior guard.
There was a three-way tie for second between Joshua Springs, Apple Valley Christian and Hesperia Christian. A coin toss determined the second, third and fourth place teams. Hesperia Christian lost the coin toss and was relegated to fourth place for CIF playoff purposes. Hesperia Christian opened CIF Division VA playoffs against the winner of the Victory League, Desert Christian Bermuda Dunes. In a tough fought game, Desert Christian came out the winner 50-45. The Patriots' main failure was to screen out opponents allowing the Conquerors to get many second and third shots at their basket. Jesse had 16 and Bryan had 15 for HCS. The Patriots again had a slow start as they have had much of the season getting behind 12-3 in the first four minutes.
Hesperia Christian lost only two seniors from last year's team, Chris Rehrer and Chris Allen. They return Bryan Glass and Jesse McDonald, two outstanding three-point shooters. They both provide the team with three point shooting. Bryan worked out this past summer with a High Desert club team and should show increased strength and shooting skills. Jesse is in his third year starting for HCS varsity and this vast experience showed during summer league. Both are 6'3". Glass has great slashing skills and McDonald will be expected to take over the defensive role Allen played last year. Nate Patterson will again have the tough role of being a 6'3" center. Finishing up a strong season as the star running back for the football team, Nate has really increased his strength. During summer league he showed great improvement in his follow-up shot after rebounding. Free throw shooting continues to be his Achilles heel. The positions of point guard and shooting guard are open for the taking by Aaron Garcia, Josh Hamilton and Trevor Wagstaffe. Senior David Little will also be fighting for a starting position this year.
Apple Valley Christian got to the second round of the playoffs but was severely beaten by Price at the HCS gymnasium. The Warriors lose both Forrest Taylor and Michael Stewart but got the Dillon brothers, Kevin and Josh, from Victor Valley High in a transfer. Junior Ryan Manahl returns for another season. Tim Langel and frosh Justin Nunes roundout the Warriors So they will remain a powerhouse in the Agape League.
Joshua Springs is an unknown this season but is always in the thick of things and has great success in their home gym. They are renowned for having the most obnoxious fans in the Agape League. They also lost in the second round of the CIF playoffs in 2000. Nathan Rynning 6' soph guard, will return to lead the Lightening Bolts. He scored 26 pts in their 2001 opener. Andre Conner is also a superb player. Team is weak on free throw shooting and that may be their Achilles' Heel this season
Victor Valley Christian finished fifth in the league last season and has been hit hard by transfers and graduation. Aja Ajanwachuku, Josh Hamilton and Kevin Taylor have transferred from VVC. Berg and Snyder have graduated. So they will be in a rebuilding mode all this season with their remaining star,Mike Hoflinger.
Bethel Christian from Lancaster finished last and is not expected to do any better this season. But one has to give this small school credit in that their players never lose heart in any of their competitions. This year may be a different year for Bethel Christian. Expected to help this change is Freshman Charron Knott, 6'6" center. Knott will be supported by senior Lionel Mongiano 5'11" Forward. Sophmore Tim Zierman 5'7" guard along with David Wong, 5'7" junior will lead the team in the front court.
Projected finish this season is Hesperia Christian and Apple Valley Christian tied for first place. Joshua Springs and Antelope Valley Christian to finish tied for second and Bethel Christian and Victor Valley Christian in a fight for the basement. HCS, Apple Valley Christian, Joshua Springs and Antelope Valley Christian will all make the playoffs. HCS should be able to make it to the third round, Apple Valley Christian to the third round and Joshua Springs and Antelope Valley Christian out in the first round.
