Game Review
In the battle of conference unbeatens, Apple Valley Christian held off a furious HCS last quarter onslaught to win 80-75 in Hesperia. The quarter scores tell the ebb and flow of the game for HCS. The first quarter was fairly even until AVC Junior Drew Mercer, one of the best three point shooters in the Agape unguarded was left unmarked for three three point shots. AVC was able to take the first quarter 26-14. In the second quarter, HCS took the game to Apple Valley Christian as Aja Ajanwachuku and Josh Hamilton scored against the Warriors. At the half the score was 34-32 in favor of AVC. HCS came out flat in the third quarter and could not seem to compete with AVC offensively nor defensively. AVC skunked HCS 25-8. Throughout three quarters Jesse McDonald could not seem to get any shots thru the hoops despite 14 attempts. In the fourth quarter, the reason this rivalry is always so exciting again became evident as HCS made a furious comeback attempt. Jesse suddenly caught on fire making all 16 of his game points in this quarter. The only thing really keeping AVC in this quarter was the outstanding rebounding and 2 foot put up shots by sophmore Justin Nunes. Just as HCS thought they could get ahead after a miss by Apple Valley Christian, Nunes would be there to save the AVC miss with a rebound and put up. Nunes ended the game with 18 points. HCS was able to pull within 4 points 77-73 with 15 seconds left. But Marcus Miller was fouled (the wrong guy to foul as he is the leading free throw shooter in the Agape league at 85%) and made his two free throws. It was a gallant effort by HCS, the #6 Div VAA team in the CIF polls against the #2 team. Aja led all scorers with 29 points while Kevin Dillon led the Warriors with 26 points. Flaws tonight for HCS were the failure to guard Drew Mercer in the first quarter and not boxing out Justin Nunes in the fourth quarter. Loren Barton has got to improve his free throw shooting above his 48% (he was 1/4 last night and 2/10 in the last six games). Bryan Glass, Trevor Wagstaffe, Aaron Garcia and Josh Martinson needed to just get two points a piece last night and HCS wins. Shooting by these guys has got to improve particularly Wagstaffe if HCS is to have a chance to beat AVC the next time around. But despite this, one has to take their hat off to the comeback effort of the HCS boys.
