Game Review

In a game in Yucca Valley Friday night, Hesperia Christian Patriots pulled out a 75-67 victory over the Joshua Springs Lightning. In winning in the Ligthning Dome, the Patriots showed the most character they have shown all season. Joshua Springs, playing in front of their raucous fans, jumped out in front of the Patriots early in the first quarter. HCS fought back to a 20-12 first quarter score in favor of Joshua Springs. HCS' tough unrelentless full court press took its toll on the Lightning and the results came later in the game as it became obvious that Joshua Springs was worn down by the press. By the half, HCS trailed Joshua Springs 30-27. HCS truly showed their character as they came out determined not to lose in Joshua Springs. HCS was led by Aja Ajanwachuku who ended up with 25 points although he was not having one of his best nights. Probably more important than his points was Aja's 7 steals, several of them critical steals. But the real key to the Patriot victory was the outstanding play of Loren Barton. Barton played his best game of his career scoring 12 points and more importantly 19 rebounds, 3 steals and four blocked shots. Many of his rebounds and blocked shots were critical in stopping Joshua Springs attempts at a comeback in the fourth quarter. Trevor Wagstaffe also had his best game of the season, showing why he was a top point guard last season. He had 8 points that got HCS going in the third quarter as they overtook the Lightning. His defense in stopping JS star shooter, Nathan Rynning from getting off clean three point shots limited Rynning to 10 points. HCS' defense tonight was superb in preventing Joshua Spring's big men, Griffin and Jackson from getting lots of points under the basket. While HCS stopped Rynning, they did allow Josh Wagner to get 17 points including 3 three pointers during Joshua Spring's fourth quarter comeback. They also did not have an answer for Sammy White's drives to the hoop as he got 25 points tonight, his season high. But the key to victory tonight was HCS' determination to get a win and their ability to keep calm in Joshua Spring's final efforts to try and pull off a comeback victory. HCS is now 12-6 and 3-1 and solidly in second place in the Agape League. Joshua Spring's now is 0-4 in Agape League play.

Game Preview

Hesperia Christian will face the Lightening of Joshua Springs this Friday night in Yucca Valley. HCS is now 2-1 in the Agape League coming off a strong win against Bethel Christian on Tuesday night. Joshua Springs is also 0-4 after a 57-47 loss Wednesday against Antelope Valley Christian. Joshua Springs will be led by #15 Nathan Rynning, a great three point shooter if left unguarded. Last year Rynning was averaging about 18-20 points a game although against HCS he had his worst two shooting nights of last season because of the defense of Trevor Wagstaffe. Rynning's high score this season is 32 points. #32 Sammy White is also capable of putting up big numbers with a high score game of 24 points. The Lightning big man is 6' 6" #55 Chris Jackson and 6' 4" #35 David Griffith. Joshua Springs has played the weakest non-conference schedule of all the Agape teams and should be very susceptible to the HCS intensive press especially Joshua Springs point guard #10 Josh Wagner whose dribbling is suspect. HCS is in second place in the Agape League behind Apple Valley Christian and tied with Joshua Springs. CIF ranks the Patriots #10 in the second Div VAA poll.
