In the semifinals of the 2002 HCS Holiday Tournament, Hesperia Christian finally played a game closer to the intensity that Coach Lester Simpson desires as they defeated Silver Valley 74-62. Fast breaks were the order of the day as HCS was able to beat and take advantage of Silver Valley's full court press. Silver Valley just could not handle HCS's three-pronged offensive attack of Josh Hamilton, Aja Ajanwachuku and Jesse McDonald who scored 23, 18 and 15 points respectively. Josh Hamilton was 75% in FG shooting while Jesse McDonald was a phenomenal 50% from the three point line. And as if that was not bad enough for the Trojans from Yermo, Aja slashed to the lane getting 6/15 and then went to the charity line where he was 100% with 6 for 6 free throws. For the third time this season, the Patriots scored over 70 points and are now averaging 72.8 points a game. All of the Patriot victories have come when they have scored over 70 points and both of their losses have come from 60+ point output. Loren Barton made a major contribution getting 11 boards against the always tough 6-6 Cameron Herbert of Silver Valley. The HCS frentic but controlled swarming defense was able to keep Silver Valley star Sidney Tharpe to 22 points, slow Ricky Johnson to only 12 points and Lucas Blankenship to just five points. The Patriots cut their turnovers down to just 15 this game and increased their steals to 17, 8 from Aja. Also notable was that HCS raised their free throw shooting percentage up to 64%, not where it should be but an improvement. The major flaw in this game was the number of points that HCS gave up to Silver Valley under the basket. HCS is now 3-2 and will face Apple Valley Christian, their arch rival in the tournament championship Saturday night. Go Patriots!
