Hesperia Christian opened their 2003-2004 basketball season against the Trojans of Pahrump Valley of Nevada, a tough Div IV team. The Patriots attacked Pahrump Valley right off the first jump ball with a pressure press. HCS got out to a 22-7 first quarter lead. Senior captains Trevor Wagstaffe and Josh Hamilton shot an outstanding 38% from the 3 point line. Sophmores Mike Petersen and Billy Hague had 10 and 8 points respectively in their first HCS varsity game. Sophmore Zach Howard and Hamilton led the team in steals with 4 each as the Patriots overall had 18 steals against the Trojans. In the third quarter Pahrump Valley made a strong effort to get back into the game but HCS fought off that surge. Most impressive was the fact that the Patriots shot 23 of 27 from the charity line for an 85%, a real improvement over last year's squad. Big man Loren Barton led the team in rebounding with 6 rebounds and three blocked shots. Overall, HCS had 39 rebounds with everyone contributing to that stat. In the end it was a very satisfactory first outing for the 2003-2004 HCS Patriots who are now 1-0. They play in the semifinals on Friday against their public school rival, Silver Valley at 6 pm in Silver Valley.
