The line and wash sketch below was created by famed Civil War artist A.R.Waud.
It shows the 69th Ohio among Union troops destroying Reed's Bridge in the face of
oncoming Confederates of John Bell Hood's Division.

Hood's men, part of James Longstreet's Corps, had finished their participation in the
Battle of Gettysburg only weeks before. They were the first major detachment of
Army of Northern Virginia troops to fight in the west during the Civil War.

The burning of Reed's Bridge signalled the beginning of the Battle of Chickamauga.
