HISTORY 2
George Tilyou
The second of four forces at work creating Coney Island was George Tilyou, an enterpreneur who opened a second theme park, STEEPLECHASE PARK, in 1897.

The centerpiece attraction was a mechanical racehorse ride, pictured above, but there were many other mostly carnival type rides. George Tilyou was responsible for bringing Fred Thompson and Skip Dundy, the two men who created Luna Park, to Coney Island. The next history page deals with them. | Early Steeplechase Entrance |
