The Origin Of Pegasus's Name
--------------------------
The legendary Pegasus
(from which Helios dream form and all winged horses get their name)
was born for the blood of the slain Mosesa, so the story goes
and after many long years serving as the steed for the heros of Greek
Myth he was even given his own constellation in the sky, that still shine
today.
Okay, I know this, you may be saying
And really like most sites nowadays I could end here...
But I won't...
I'm instand asking (and answering) the question that no one seems to
ask about Pegasus:
Why IS he called Pegasus anyway?
A Pegasus , as I said above is a WINGED HORSE...
Pegasus in Sailor Moon SuperS is a WINGED UNICORN...
Now I can see the answers that can probably be though of off hand
(in fact I thought about a lot these being the answers too at first)
1. Naoko-san just thought it sounded better to keep all names coming from
Greek mythogeoy in her work.
2. There is no word in for "winged unicorn" in Japanese.
But the real answer, at least more real than most, I think is this:
Pegasus really doesn't have a horn!
Yes, you see it everywhere, even when he is human,
But these are my thoughts:
Pegasus horn is merely a magical armored "carry case" for the golden
crystal. The power he gives off when fighting is really the golden crystal
inside his horn. When it was in danger of being taken from him, it's gardian, that triggered
the crystal's own defense system and the crystal went over to it's keepers
head and attached it's self to his spirit, building a case of magic golden bone
around it's self.
So, as long as he lives, Pegasus will carry the crystal in his horn (even when
he is human) but really be a winged horse in dream form, a Pegasus.
That, I think, is the origin of him name!
