The Tree of Life, also known as the Sepher Sephiroth or the Minutum Mundum [Little World] is a device of ancient, unknown origin that is used to classify all .things, including Levels of Consciousness and 'Ways of doing.'

The Tree is possibly of Ancient Aegyptian origin, certainly of Hebrew Qabalistic derivation, and definitely a part of the Western Magickal tradition.

It is composed of Ten Spheres (Sephiroth) that are linked by Twenty-two Paths. Each Sphere is a 'Thing' [noun] or a 'Level of Consciousness,' while each Path is a 'Way' or 'Method' [verb].

An eleventh Sphere called Ruach or Daath is sometimes referenced. It is said to represent Knowledge, and Knowledge is considered to be Illusion. When included in the Tree of Life symbol, it is usually depicted as a dotted-line Sphere and is often known as the "False Sphere."

Each of the Spheres (Sephiroth) are numbered, with #1 at the top and #10 at the bottom.

Each Sphere corresponds with 4 cards in the Tarot deck or the 'Playing Card' deck:

Sphere #1 represents the 4 Aces; Sphere #5
represents the 4 Fives, etc.

Each of the Paths (Atu) are also numbered, beginning with 0 (zero) and progressing to #21.

Each Path corresponds with an Atu, or Trump card, in the Tarot. In the modern 'Playing Card' deck, only The Fool (#0) has survived (as "The Joker" ).

Now let's look at Consciousness as represented in seven ascending Levels or Planes. The Tree of Life [above] looks like the structure of some chemical molecule, but the 7 Planes [below] are like a ladder.

The 7 Planes are possibly of Ancient Tibetan origin and have definitely become a part of the Western Mystical tradition.

There is no difference between the Tree of Life and the Seven Planes, except that they are laid out differently (presented in different dimensions or formats).

There is also the concept of Dimensional Expansion, or Multi-level Overshadowing, wherein Kether (#1) of any given Tree is merely Tiphereth (#6) of an even larger Tree. This also occurs when the Solar Seven Planes (as we know them) are seen merely as the seven sub-planes of the physical plane of an even larger Cosmic Seven Planes.

This means that any system is just a sub-system in an even greater system.
