My first lust for music would arise around grade 5 when I drooled over this guitar and that stringed instrument. Finally, by grade 6 I had received my first guitar, a fender squire and played on it night and day. I joined my first band entitled "Aura" at grade 7 with Jeff Gorrie (Drums) and Adam Dupuis (Bass) while I took the role of guitar. We started playing Marilyn Manson and Nirvana covers, attempting to hone our skills. Evidentally we found ourselves switching instruments within the first year and I would take control of the rhythmic beast called drums. My brother had drums at home, so I began focusing all my attention on the tribal pulse that would soon become my life. In 1999 my brother would move away to Vancouver, leaving his drumset with me and opening the path to my musical future. "Aura" eventually switched to the name "Wired", recuiting new band members and exploring new territories. During all the experimentation I found interest in Nine Inch Nails, and my desire for loud release grew into an insatiable fire. While I was growing into musical diversity, the band was slowly dissapating into a narrower view point. My desire for the fine art got the better of me as my school grades began plumetting downhill. The useless banter of education proved futile to me and they eventually evicted me from their higher learning. As my attention was turning to that of my individual skills I met the love of my life, Aimee Leader. She soon became a huge influence in my life, and I'd give up anything before losing her. In the middle of 2000 I got a phone call from Cafe Insomnia, asking for an audition in their band. They gave me a CD of their pre-recorded music and asked me to learn a few of their songs before the first meeting. When I heard the CD I was overwhelmed with anticipation and knew this was the band that I wanted to go all the way with. After the audition the guys called me back and it was rather evident that I would be fitting into the big picture. The next year of my life would prove a true musical challenge, just what I needed to advance to the next stage of my rhythmic evolution. After learning the band's setlist within the first 3 months we began playing shows and spreading the name of Cafe Insomnia around the Okanagan. I've never felt tighter with a band and at ease with the process of creating music. I'd like to take a moment to give a special thanks to my brother, Jordie Duperon. Without the sacrifice of giving up his drums to me, I'd never be where I am today. Now, I lead a simple happy life. Just me, my drums, my girl, the band and Trent, our bearded dragon band mascot. Nothing more, nothing less, than a life devoted to the sacrifices involved for musical departure. -Nik Duperon |
