Delicate Shell Insatiable fire Not the Destination.... The Journey Defensive Sting Cafe Insomnia's
formation truely began
when Kaylub and Haplo met
eachother at a very young age.
While attending Juniour High the
two happened to meet eachother and became familiar faces to eachother in English class. The two slowly became closer friends and the virtues that would become Cafe Insomnia's strong point were already evident in their childish humour (which still remains).

As the two entered High School Kaylub was continuing his musical journey with 'HeadspacE' (Rory Burnett, Josh Deglow, Matt Carr, Mitch Harding, Kaylub Hyde), but slowly began finding himself in acoustic work. While he was recording his second solo album (Road To No Where) at the young age of 15 he asked Haplo to become a part of a few of the songs. Haplo, full of energy and creativity was eager to take the offer up and take on the singing project he had been waiting for. The 2 created 3 songs during this era; Wicketts and Lampshades, Rough and Sugar (Though if you heard the band versions today you'd laugh). Immediately after the recording of "Road To No Where" Kaylub moved to Regina, Saskatchewan.

While Kaylub was gone Coren and Haplo would began a musical bonding that brought the two of them creatively closer. Many recordings and blossoming ideas were created between the two as they continued their unending search for a band. Meanwhile, Kaylub was in Regina attempting very hard to find a mindset to fit into (Many of his experimental recordings such as "U-Turn" were created at this time). Finally, after a long year of feeling like they were all in a incomplete musical family the string would snap. The hands of fate pushed the 3 musicians back together when Kaylub moved back to BC. Kaylub took up residence in Haplo's house as they prepared to party their asses off and graduate from highschool. Immediately, the boys realized the potential they had as a full band and joined forces. The name "Cafe Insomnia" was officially adorned for the new project.

Recordings began that summer, old songs being redone, new ones being placed down on track for the first time. The trio, all being unable to play the drums, found themselves recording tracks with self-created drum loops. They immediately decided that trying to hide the fact that they were electronically self created drums would make them sound out of place. So, they incorporated them, treating them as an actual instrument and went all the way with electronic effects. The computer became the fourth member of the band, and the first few recordings of "Nevermore" began. Soon there after, local festivals began asking the band to play and they found themselves in a predicament.... "How can the computer play onstage with us?". So they immediately began looking for a live drummer and would begin a long hard journey. The first of the trial members to emerge was Lil'E and a few full band practices took place. They were hoping to incorporate him into their first live show, but it would come to not work out to well at all. The Peachland Art Festival would be played without a live drummer, leaving the band rather upset and dismayed with their performance.

Once the first, unsettling performances were finished off the band turned back to finishing their album. Half way through the recording the band would invite Tristan Slater to join them and become another member of the band. He agreed and took some time from his solo projects to join in on the writing and recording process. "Nevermore" was completed within the next 3 months and the boys sat back to let the album do the talking for awhile before they planned their next move. CD sales were funding the band as they were still needing a live drummer, an obvious step that was needed to be taken before evolution could continue. So, in the winter the boys auditioned their next drummer, Justin Munro. Justin was given the task of writing new drum beats for the already recorded songs and then, find a way to meld with the boys as a band. After 3 months of practicing it was evident that it was not going to work out, so the always present members looked towards finding another drummer.

Completely discouraged, it seemed the band was almost ready to give up when they met Nik Duperon. After learning that he was a drummer the band decided to give it another go before throwing in the Towel. They called Nik and setup an audition with him, handing him a copy of their album and asking him to learn the songs on it. Within the first practice, it was all clicking, they all knew that this was the circle that they would belong to. Tristan, however was proving a difficult force to have in a live band, as his brain was currently setup for the conduction of recording engineering. With no hard feelings and everyone in agreement, Tristan would become an "in-studio" member of Cafe Insomnia as it was the most comfortable arrangement for everyone.

So now with a full live band, a recorded album and having completed highschool the members were fully energized to make everything happen. With Nik adding the firey spine of drums the tidal wave of live performance just seemed to explode out of a 2 year wait. The band has been playing numerous live shows and sharing their music with all those who keeps their ears open. Opening up to introspection, however, is a must for the full experience of their live performance. Really, most of our music is meant to make you, as a human being, enter constructive critiscm of self. "Where are you in your life? How can it become better? What steps can I take to make sure it doesn't become worse? What are my true emotions?"

The band, now ready to enter the next stage of their evolution are currently preparing to record numerous songs with Nik's live drums present... Not the passionately challanged electronic beats. New songs have been being written at a new angle, under a new light with the current members and are the teams proudest creations. However, most of "Nevermore" will be re-recorded with Nik's drumming before the new songs are placed down onto tape. As for now, you can hear all our ready material at any of our live shows that are constantly being played.

Thank you, everyone for your constant support. You are the fuel that feeds our fire.
