Solo Robbie Show @The Crooked Bar Say your week has been really hard and you’re feeling overwhelmed or bummed out or just plain tired. What can you do? If I were to suggest anything, I would tell you to go see a Robbie show! Or watch it on the computer ;) (for some of you folks who live far away). There’s nothing like it, and it can cure anything;) Robbie’s show are kind of like, you get there and once he starts playing you forget everything that’s going on and get lost inside the music for a while. You don’t have to think about anything- just the music. When you listen to his music and lyrics and just be in the moment, everything else seems to disappear right then and there. Like there’s nothing else going on in your life besides the fact that you are at a Robbie show.
This is exactly how I felt when I went and saw Robbie on Dec. 14th at The Crooked Bar. It was a Thursday night and of course I had tests to study for, and yes I was a little worried, but while I was there, while I was listening to him play his music, I completely forget about them. They just didn’t seem to matter anymore. I hadn’t thought about anything else except that one second in time, in the NOW, listening to an amazing musician. Isn’t it amazing? I mean, that someone can have that kind of an effect on you? That someone’s talent, can bring you joy, inspiration, and relief. That music can give you what you need?
I think it is. In fact, I think it’s even more than amazing. It’s a feeling you can’t get from anything else- that sense of connection. Between you and the person singing or playing. In my case, between me and Robbie. When he plays and sings, I feel what he’s feeling- it’s almost like being inside someone’s thoughts. You know exactly what that person is thinking. And that is very much of what musicians do- they put their thoughts and feelings into their songs, into their lyrics. And when someone connects with them, it’s incredible.
After the show he gave me his setlist, and here’s what the night consisted of:
Jungle
Brownies
The Drain
New Orleans
Rhymes
Come Down
Searching
Take This Love (debut)
Corduroy
Soulflower
Monsters
A few of these songs you sould recognize- because Rhymes, Come Down, Cordurouy, and Soulflower can all be found on his different cds and tapes. And if you’ve watched some of his Tuesday night webcasts, you probably know most of them! :) The show was really good, and I was excited to hear Monsters again, because I just love that song. I’ve loved it since the first time I heard it in Genghis Cohen the first time I saw Robbie live. It’s one of those songs that just sticks with you.
