Things to Pack

Here are a few tips on what to pack.

1. It used to be that traveler's cheques were the preferred method for carrying money; that is no longer the case, credit cards especially VISA and MC are the order of the day. My bank debit card has come in handy on many trips abroad.

2. If you prefer to use traveler's cheques, bring more than you think you'll need, in both large and small Denominations.

3. Carry US dollar bills, you will get a better exchange rate with dollar bills than with travelers checks. The current exchange rate is 1,740/= (schillings) per dollar.

4. Casual dress is fine. No warm clothing, there are no winters in Uganda and I would avoid wearing jeans during church services and during the days. First Ugandans are very formal when it comes to religion, they tend to go to church servics in their best costumes. Secondly, during the day temperatures are rather warm and one would be uncomfortable in jeans.

5. Here are some other items that you can bring along: A bible, small note book, camera and film, pencils, pens, an immersion heater, calculator, binoculars for bird watching, flash lights, addresses of friends and family so that you can mail them post cards.

6. Think of small items that you can present especially to children who you will meet. (balloons, books, bible something small)

7. Get a "security pouch" at times referred to as a "money belt" - don't leave home without one. It may be the single most important item on this list. It is worn under your clothes (and not accessed in any public place). This is where you will store you money, air ticket and passport.
