The speakers are asking for hundreds of dollars and a LIFELONG COMMITMENT. Don't blindly accept what is said or things you don't understand, attempts to change the subject, or evasive remarks. Be critical. YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW. Transcendental Meditation (TM), as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, is virtually identical to many free meditations, e.g. "The Relaxation Response" and Father Thomas Keating's Christian Centering prayer. Per court documents, the ``secret mantras" used in TM are assigned using age, and/or age and sex, depending on the teacher training course the teacher attended. Here are the mantras from a 1978 course. Notes: "Age" is that of the initiate at the time of learning the technique. The superscript number following each mantra indicates the meaning: , devi of learning, music, speech; , devi of wealth; ; ; :

IS TM A RELIGION? The mantras are names of Hindu deities and the puja is on the next page.

• In Beacon Light of the Himalyas (1955, page 65), Maharishi states: "For our practice, we select only the suitable mantras of personal Gods. Such mantras fetch to us the grace of personal Gods ..."
• TM teachers must sign an oath which, in part, states: ``It is my fortune, Guru Dev [the Maharishi's dead master], that I have been accepted to serve the Holy Tradition and spread the Light of God ... and I promise on your altar, Guru Dev, ..."
• In a 1984 pastoral statement, the Archbishop of Manilla stated: "The Maharishi's doctrine and teaching on God, man, the way to God, pain and suffering, and sin is in open contradiction to Christian doctrine.
• TM IS BARRED FROM THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS. The U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey, (Malnak v. Yogi, D.C. Civil Action No. 76-0341) ruled that the TM technique, Science of Creative Intelligence, and the TM puja are religious and are to be excluded from being taught in New Jersey public schools. The teaching of SCI/TM and the Puja are religious in nature, no other inference is permissible or reasonable" This was later upheld by the U.S. Court of Appeals, 3rd Circuit (Nos. 78-1568, 78-1882, 592 F.2d 195).

IS TM HARMLESS?

• Many people have been treated and some hospitalized for TM related problems.
• The TM ``checking notes" describe common side effects of TM: headache, stiff neck, physical movements, excessive sleep, obsessional thoughts and emotions. Checking does not always eliminate these.
• Numerous negative psychological side effects have been reported in peer reviewed scientific journals including partially impaired mental faculties, loss of self-determination and motivation, derealization and depersonalization, "ego-alien" and epileptic-like experiences, aggravation of preexisting mental illness, and the onset of mental illness.

• What are other TM related programs and how much do they cost: sidhis, yagyas, healing, Jyotish? How much time and money have you spent over the years on TM, etc.?
• What are the names of the organizations affiliated with TM?
• How much time do you spend each day on TM and the sidhis? Do you live or vacation at TM facilities?
• How long have you been meditating? Are you enlightened or in cosmic consciousness?
• Why do books about cults always talk about TM and yogic flying?

Here is the PUJA INITIATION CEREMONY in which you must participate when you start TM. You will not be just ``asked to witness." This is a lie. You must bring fruit, flowers, and a new white handkerchief to be offered on the altar before the picture of the Maharishi's dead master, Guru Dev. You must remove your shoes before entering the initiation room. You must be present; at the end, you will be directed by gesture to kneel before the picture of Guru Dev.
