Duo is the typical anime American--loud, easygoing and occasionally obnoxious. But underneath his carefree exterior is a deep loss from his childhood (which is revealed in Blind Target) and an understanding of death that can only come when faced constantly with the cruelties of war and violences. He hides it well for most of the series, joking around on the battlefield and off (even around heero, who is constantly annoyed by his incessant talking) despite the differences between the pilots of wing and deathscythe, Duo manages to befriend Wing's pilot. Duo also befirends an employee of OZ, Hilde, who deserts and meets up with Duo several times in the series.
