Why The Red Sox Were Eliminated

By Kevin Nowins

The Boston Red Sox were swept by the Chicago White Sox in the ALDS, because their pitching was simply out-matched. So now the offseason loss of Pedro Martinez comes back to haunt them. Boy, would Terry Francona have loved to have the strikeout machine's 2.82 ERA and mind-blowing opponent batting average of .204 to match up against Chicago. If only they had kept Pedro or replaced him with a worthy starter, the Red Sox may have had a chance.

Curt Schilling fails to throw a single pitch in the postseason. No bloody sock this year.

Boston loses closer Keith Foulke to season ending injury.

Orlando Hernandez celebrates after popping up one and striking out two to end the Sixth with the bases loaded.

The Awful Boston Starters:

Game 2. David Wells

Game 3. Tim Wakefield

So why did Boston lose? Well it comes down to this.. Postseason baseball is decided by pitching. The better a pitching staff is, the better that team will do in the playoffs. This year, Boston's pitching was reflective of how they did in the playoffs... god awful. Therefore, Boston better hope to acquire some pitching in the offseason as they dump off free agents.
