The Carpenter family line can be traced all the way back to England. This particular Carpenter family line has some interesting relations. They are related to Daniel Boone and also, Benedict Arnold, through marriages. This line also has Shawnee Indian in its heritage, and of course, a Civil War Veteran, Alfred Carpenter.

Alfred Carpenter was my Great, Great Grandfather. He served in the Civil war. He enlisted in Calhoun County on Nov. 26th 1862. He was in Company H, 3rd West Virginia Calvary in the Union Army. He was Bugler. He was wounded in the hand in a battle. Not a good place to be wounded if you are a Bugler. He was discharged from the Calvary on June 30th 1865. Alfred died Jan 17th 1909 and is buried in the Carpenter Cemetary in Orma, West Virginia.

SOME HISTORICAL INFORMATION ON THE CARPENTER'S OF WEST(by God)VIRGINIA

Joseph Coles Carpenter was the son of Nathaniel Carpenter, b. 1668, d.1729; who was a native of Musketo Cove, Long Island, NY. Joseph settled in Allegheny Co.,VA in the spring of 1746 and he obtained 782 acres by patent or grant on 1, Jun 1750 from King George III. He returned for his family in NY after he cleared the land and planted his crops. When he and the family returned to VA, Peter Wright came with him and obtained a grant for the entire of what is now Covington, Botetourt Co.,VA. Then in 1792, Peter divided his land between his sons, John & William.

Old papers that are now on file in the Court House at Fincastle, Botetourt Co.,Va, is the information that the Carpenter pioneers of this region erected a stockade-fort as a refuge during Indian attacks. This was called "Fort Carpenter".

Jeremiah Carpenter was one of the first settlers of what is now Braxton Co.,(W)VA. He was the son of William Carpenter, who was a descendant of the Carpenter family from New England. William Carpenter, was the son of Joseph Coles Carpenter. Joseph was scalped in an attack by the Mingo and Delaware Indians, which is said to have taken place in October, 1763. The Virginia State Library records it was September 1750, who knows, and who cares. You decide which date you prefer to use. There were nine people killed in this raid along with William and took place on the Jackson River - Nicholas Carpenter, James Mayse, Nicholas Nutt, Stephen Sewell, James Montgomery, John Byrd, George Kincaid, a Mr. Boyle and Mr. Fry.

Family stories say that brothers, Jeremiah and Benjamin Carpenter, came with their families in the late 1700's, packing their belongings on the backs of their oxen. They followed creeks and valley paths through the wilderness until they reached what is now Centrailia, near the Braxton-Webster county line. Jeremiah Carpenter, age twelve, was captured by the Shawnee Indians from the Ohio country. The Holcombe boy captured with him was killed. Jeremiah escaped from this village when he was about 18 or 19 and returned to his family. It has been noted that Jeremiah Carpenter returned to the Shawnee village which he had escaped to fetch his sweetheart, his soon to be Shawnee bride, and I assume his wife to be. It has been said that the Carpenter's raised her as their own, until marriage.

The Carpenters became substantial landholders in this part of the Elk Valley and on nearby Holly River. Benjamin was killed by two Indians in his cabin and they also scalped his wife. When Jeremiah came home and found his brother, he got his wife and went up Laurel Creek to hide from the Indians in case they came back. They waded in the creek to avoid footpaths, to the mouth of Camp Run, where they hid under a shelf rock and shortly had their first son, Solomon.

-A little more about my Brother George Lee Carpenter-

George served in the U.S. Marine Corp. George enlisted May 31st 1968. His tour of duty included; Camp Lejune, NC, Camp Pendleton, Ca., Hawaii and Okinawa. George was at one time on wait off the shores of VietNam. George was discharged from the Marine Corp with an Honorable discharge in 1971. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, George went to work as a Union Roofer. George met his wife Rose Marie Lipscome, soon after his release from the service and they married and had 3 children. Heather, George Lee and Joshua Carpenter. George later moved his family to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina in Jan of 1985. Murrells Inlet is a little fishing community just south of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

George's children at the time were ages 8 yrs to 3 yrs old. In April of 1985 George was killed in a very tragic auto accident. Two of George's children were with him in his work truck when his vehicle was struck by a 15 year old girl, who just got her drivers license. The young teen's car streamed across a four lane major highway without stopping and plowing into the side of George's Truck, then the vehicle struck George's wife car who was traveling behind George. The impact was so great that it demolished all 3 vehicles involved. George's daughter, Heather, who was riding in the truck with her dad, has told us, that her Dad seen the car coming and tried to move out of the way, but it was too late, and he pushed both Heather and George Lee Jr, down to the floor board of the truck, then George was ejected through the windshield upon on impact and landed head first onto the pavement. George was brain-dead when the Ambulance arrived. George can be credited with saving his children's lives. Heather and George Lee Jr, were not hurt in the accident. By throwing them to the floor of the truck it kept them from being ejected from the vehicle.

George was very loving husband and Father. His wife and children were his world. Whatever they needed, George made sure that they got it.
