Karen Hunt Meets Kevin Costner
Karen Hunt Meets Kevin Costner
I work at a college in Carson, California. Hollywood is near by and so our
campus is often used for filming. Last August, I noticed a crew setting up
on at our baseball field, very near my normal parking lot. And ... like any
good Kevin fan ...I decided to check it out. Turns out Kevin was going to
film a coffee ad for Japanese TV that day. I never made it to work. Kevin
arrived in a van shortly before noon. The set up for the ad had a car on
one end and a group of young boys playing baseball at the other. While
waiting for shooting to begin, Kevin walked by a few times (always with a
group of people) to set up different scenes. Then, Kevin would leave again
and his look alike would take over.
Highlights of the day: one of the grounds people from my campus was there
to rake the baseball field. He took a picture of Kevin, during one of the
walk-bys, and his camera was taken away by someone saying that Kevin didn't
like people taking his picture. The rake guy told the man taking his camera
that he had asked Kevin for a picture and Kevin said ok. A few minutes
later, after someone checked with Kevin, the camera was returned and Kevin
sent word that he would take a picture with the guy later. So ... the next
time Kevin walked by, I put my arms around the guy with the camera and said
"Don't worry Kevin, I'll protect you." Kevin goes "What?" and walks over to
where the guy and I were sitting. So, we're sitting there talking to Kevin
... and the whole film shoot just stands still until Kevin was done talking
to us. It was pretty funny. Kevin said something about being at the
Hollywood Bowl a few days before and having someone take his picture and
kind of freaking him out.
Highlight 2: Kevin's trailer was quite near the Kraft Services table (with
all the food). At one point the guy with the camera points out that Kevin
was out of his trailer talking on a cell phone with his shirt off. All I
can say is that I gained a few pounds that day from walking up to the table
for food, then back, and back and back.
So, once the shoot ended (the ad ends with Kevin calling one of the boys playing baseball over for a game of catch ... like the end of Field of
Dreams ...) Kevin walks by us but then remembers us. I didn't bring a camera
but had some postcards of movie ads for some Kevin films. So, I said to the
guy with the camera that I would give him a postcard for Kevin to sign AND
... I would take his picture with Kevin if he would take a picture of me and
Kevin. He said ok. I had Kevin autograph a postcard of a Japanese ad for
Tin Cup and a copy of his CD "The Simple Truth." He was a little shocked
that I had a copy of the CD. (For those of you who don't have it yet, just
order it from Tower Records as a Japanese import. I did it online.) Then,
as the sun was going down behind us and after everyone from the shoot had
cleared the field, I got my photo with Kevin. The best nine hour day I've
ever had at work.
