Chapter 21

The second round of the tryouts was for Whitney to come and sing a
song of her choosing all the way through. Now, since Whitney sang almost
every night anyway she just decided to choose one of her best songs. After
using “Rock Paper Scissors” to determine which song, we finally landed on
“Because You Loved Me” by Celine Dion. Whitney sang that one well,
although she wasn’t Celine Dion, I must say it was good enough for me.

The next actual day we set off again for the building where the tryouts
were located. I waited for her in the waiting room I had been in a day earlier
and looked around at the other people. There was an older lady who was
obviously going over her lyrics. She looked pleasant enough; obviously she had
done this before. Another person in the room was a snotty looking teenager who
looked like she thought the part would be instantly hers. On sight I got a bad
vibe from her. Oh well, it wasn’t like I was going to have to talk to her.

Whitney exited the room with a look of pure relief.

“Bobbi! We have to stay, they’re going to announce the winner in about
an hour,” she said in a hushed excited voice when she sat down next to me.

“That’s great! How do you think you did? I wasn’t watching you this
time,” I said trying to get her to talk. I was acting like a kid in a candy store, and
I knew it.

“I think I did well they smiled if that’s any indication. I really hope I get
this. The recording of the voice will be done in Orlando, Florida. They didn’t
say dates, but told me that this is a big deal.”

“Sweet! I am so glad for you I can’t contain myself. Seriously. Now,
let’s play a little game of Swish,” I said pulling out two decks of cards. Now,
I’m no going to explain swish, all I’ll say is that it’s a relatively short game,
involving two people, each with a deck of cards competing to get the highest
score. A lot of games later we were getting sick of the game and were picking
up all the cards and sorting them.

We had just begun reading magazines we found near us when that same
little man with the clipboard walked out of the tryout room with a look of
determination on his face.

He cleared his throat, “I am here to announce the winner.”

Everyone in the room looked at him excitedly.

“The person chosen to sing in the commercial for Dove soaps is
Whitney Stevenson.”
