Season 2000

2000 was a pretty good season for the Melbourne Demons and their supporters, so I've decided to add this page to my site. First, the club picked up some good, young players in the National Draft, including Brad Green, Paul Wheatley, Matthew Whelan and Cameron Bruce. The season started off with a 2 point loss against Richmond in Round 1, but then finished with a 70 point win against West Coast in Round 22. At the end of the Home and Away season, Melbourne were in third position on the AFL ladder. Melbourne then went on to defeat Carlton in the Qualifying Final by 9 points. They then defeated North Melbourne in the Preliminary Final by 50 points, with Farmer kicking 8 goals. This put the Dee's into their first Grand Final since 1988, although unfortunately they finnished runner-up to the dominant Essendon. Although the Dee's lost the grand final, Melbourne's reserves, the Sandringham Zebras won the grand final, and so did the seconds. 2000 also saw one of Melbourne's most popular and consistent players, Shane Woewodin, pick up the Brownlow Medal. And, there was also the departure of a few players including Stephen Tingay, Matthew Febey and Jaime Shanahan.
