Hollywood Reporter , Frasier's 100th Episode November 3rd 1997
CAST CLOSE UP :- Jane Leeves
Jane Leeves whoplays the enderingly dizzy Daphne Moon , makes no apologies for her character.
"Nowadays , women are supposed to want careers , and be ambitious , but Daphne takes care of people and that what she wants to do," says the English born actress. "She does make a difference and bring people together , and as far as im concerned there's nothing wrong with that."
Leeves was suggested for the role by NBC Entertainment president Warren Littlefield , who had seen her work as Miles Silverburg's girlfriend Audrey on "Murphy Brown"
"There was no doubt in my mind that "Frasier" was the place to go - it was a character was so well defined in the pilot script without being terribly expositionary - her psychic ability , the way she got along with the dad , which got under Frasier's skin. You knew her and these people immediately."
Though Daphne's character was pretty well drawn by the time it arrived on scene , Leeves helped a bit. "I came up with stuff that Daphne had eight brothers , which would explain why she was so comfortable with guys like this"
Leeves , who came Stateside with "A suitcase and $1,000" and a desire to act , considers the role a gem. She loves it for the same reason others do. "I think [Daphne] is more grounded than anyone else in the show," she insists. "She is earthy , normal ,nice , decent and never apologizes for the fact that she's not incredibly ambitious , that her happiest times come when she is feeling needed, doing a good job and helping people , that's who she is."
For Leeves who appeared in last year's miniseries "Pandora's Clock" in a very different role and also provided the voice of the ladybug in Disney's "James and the Giant Peach" says she feels Daphne is a good fit professionally.
But is Daphne a good fit personally ?
"I suppose there is an element of me in every role , but Daphne is not who I am except for the fact that i certianly consider myself to be a character actress" Leeves concludes "and Daphne is certianly a character"
